reading a biography about hannibal (the carthaginian general, not the cannibal) atm and came across this gem (for context hannibal is hamilcar's son)
gotta love the handsome guy who seduced a war general in the 200s BCE, and, when the first guy died, SEDUCED HIS SON (not hasdrubal's, hannibal was hamilcar's son)
the barcids make me really sad. we straight up don't know anything about hannibal's mom and sisters. hamilcar dies. hannibal & mago went on their italian campaign while hasdrubal was in iberia. their mother probably stayed in carthage & heard the news that two of her sons are dead. her last son comes back to carthage after decades, a shadow of his former self, defeated and restless. after seven years he's forced to go into exile again, leaving whatever family he still had left, and he never saw them again. they heard distant news of hannibal's exploits in the courts of various kings, and of his eventual suicide. The last time they would've been a happy, united family would've been when hannibal was nine, hasdrubal was seven, and mago was five :(
at the battle of Zama, Hannibal Barca was 45.
