Lafayette plants his hands on the General’s head, leaning forward. Washington patiently waits for his head to be turned for a typical two-cheek kiss, but then forcefully jerks back before their lips can touch.

Washington: What are you doing?

Lafayette, confused: Pardon me, Monsieur. I’m still not quite familiar with your American customs. I thought this was how you greet companions?

Washington: I understand our interactions are different to the French, but we’re not as . . . passionate as you lot.

Lafayette: . . . but Monsieur, that is how Alexander greets Lt. Laurens . . .
