(not so happy but) I imagine that they didn’t get to sleep together often (sleep sleep, I mean) cause it would draw a lot of attention. The Lieutenant spending the night at the Hamiltons’ house, Lord Thomas Hamilton never leaving McGraw’s house and all that crap. But of course, they managed to do it a few times. The first time, James fell asleep because they had spent the entire day, talking about their endavour, reading and sex. He wakes up early next morning, and Thomas is already up and James panics for a bit. He gets up and murmurs that Thomas should have woken him up. Thomas tries to tell him that it is alright, that they can find a cover story if anyone asks, but it doesn’t work at first. Thomas walks to him and places his hands on James’ shoulders. It takes a short moment for their eyes to meet. Thomas says softly again that everything will be alright, but if James is uncomfortable with this, they won’t have to do it again.James goes home, and he realizes just how good it felt when he slept next to Thomas, when he didn’t have to sneak out in the middle of the night, as if they were doing something terribly wrong. He remembers how for a few seconds, when he woke up, Thomas being the first thing he saw, made him feel complete.Next time, it is James that asks for Thomas to spend the night at his place.(bonus headcanon) That last day before everything fell apart, James was nervous about his meeting with the Admiral and wakes up first. Thomas is sleeping next to him and James doesn’t have the heart to wake him and kisses his head, telling him “I will make this right for you, I promise.”. Thomas mumbles, half asleep “I love you.” Those were the last words they said to each other
