My Internet Archive folder of Hamlets

A discussion about the 1917 Italian movie, which includes transcripts of its speech cards. Unfortunately, I can't get one of the surviving reels of this film out of the National Film and Television Archive in London.

A video review of Hamlet the Vampire Slayer that includes footage of the film. I have been unable to find the movie itself.

the daughter of denmark ; excerpt

act three, scene one. sneak peak at that one monologue i have dreaded writing for years... i'm kinda happy where i ended up but just in case i'm saving the whole thing for beta readers

Ophelia sits with a book on her lap, open to a chapter heading, her hair in a loose braid looped over her shoulder. The curtains are all thrown open. The sun bathes the room in light, a harsh and cold white glow. Her door is slightly ajar. She looks up from her book only briefly. A quick flick of her eyes that Hamlet almost misses in the light of the day.

They do not say anything. The need to say something begins crawling under Hamlet’s skin. There is so much unacknowledged. An unknown force possesses her to speak.

“To live or not to live—that is the question I am asking myself. All these hours I wander the halls, the same question. The same argument. Am I a better woman to suffer it? To suffer the life we all live? Fate has cast her eyes upon me and there is only one way to escape her gaze. She stalks me in the forest with the eyes of a deer. To die, to sleep—it ends, then: the fate I am bound to. To die, to sleep…”

Hamlet stops. She drags her hands over her face, makes a sound that is between a sigh and a sob. Ophelia looks down in her lap. She hasn’t turned a single page.

I went to a play last night - Fat Ham - and I can't stop thinking about. I went in knowing it was a retelling of Hamlet, and I'm not a Shakespeare fan, but this was so well done.

It's set in the South, and had an all black cast.

It took place during a backyard bbq.

It made Hamlet a comedy - no one (permanently) died and there were so many laughs. (There's already so much tragedy in the black stories - why not flip the script?)

It made Hamlet a queer coming out story - ending with a drag performance.

Pretty sure it shocked the two elderly black women I sat next to. Oo, their comments went the repressed gay nuzzled the somewhat open one.

The ghost kept popping out of nowhere. The grill, the cooler, the house wall. Amazing stage design.

The woman in the crowd who shouted out 'just let him die!' when the claudius character choked on a bone.

All the nods to the original by the hamlet character and the others making fun of him for it

All in all, a good show!
