The soft stirring of the mattress made Eliza peel open her eyes. She squinted at the curtains across the shadowed windows and the shape of the cot by her childhood bed, with little Cornelia still curled up upon it, fast asleep. Peggy’s snoring was audible from the bed on the opposite side of the room. Just as her eyes began to droop closed again, the quilt adjusted beside her, letting in a blast of cold December air.
Alexander, she remembered suddenly. Sharing a bed with him was still wonderous and new. They’d had a room to themselves for the first few days of their marriage, but the arrival of several guests for the holiday season had put a premium on space.
“Where are you going?” Eliza muttered, gathering the quilt tighter around her as she reached out to arrest his progress in slipping out of bed.
“I’m sorry,” he said, voice low to not upset the quiet stillness of the morning. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
Not an answer, she noted. She rolled over to face him, and saw he was halfway out of bed, with his nightshirt askew and his hair adorably mussed. He certainly didn’t look very awake. “Why are you getting up? It’s barely dawn.”
He hesitated for a moment. “Habit, I suppose. The General always demands we wake before dawn.”
“The General isn’t here,” she reminded him.
“Even so, I’m awake now. Perhaps I’ll go read in your father’s library until breakfast.”
“It’s Christmas day. No one will be stirring for hours yet. Lie back down.”
His legs adjusted back up into the bed as he arranged the blankets back over himself. He’d obeyed her, but he looked a little dubious as he readjusted on the pillows. “What am I meant to do, lying here awake for the next several hours?”
“You’re meant to go back to sleep,” she said fondly.
“But I’m awake,” he replied, as though that were somehow a retort.
“Come here.” She rolled on to her back and gestured for him to come closer.
As he inched towards her on the mattress, she guided his head towards her chest, so that his ear rested just over her heart. His arm settled around her as he made himself comfortable. She rubbed his back with one hand and dragged her fingers rhythmically through his hair with the other.
“Sleep,” she whispered.
He hummed contentedly against her, going limp in her arms. Within minutes, she was rewarded with the soft snuffle that meant he’d fallen back into slumber. She let her ministrations ease to a stop, instead resting her arms around his shoulders and back to keep him securely against her. Her cheek pressed against the crown of his head, warm in the chilly morning air.
Her eyes drifted closed once more.
The night was cold, but the spirit inside was light and warm. The Schuylers were holding a ball once more. Philip Schuyler was home from the war, until the court martial came through. He knew a messenger would be sent soon. Elizabeth came over to her father and hugged him.
“Are you okay father?” Elizabeth asked standing next to him greeting the guest as they came in.
“I am fine darling, do enjoy the ball.”Elizabeth nodded and walked off. She saw a server with a plate of wine glasses and took one off before walking away. She saw her sister and quickly turned around and ran into a colonel who was rushing inside. The colonel knocked her over and stopped.
“I’m so sorry ma’am, I was not paying attention.” He out his hand down to help her up. Elizabeth took his hand and smiled. He gave her a hankerchief from his pocket.
“I will say I accept your apology if I knew the name of the colonel who bumped into me.” Elizabeth teased the young man. She took the hankerchief and began to dab at her dress. She knew Angelica would be mad since she was borrowing the dress. Elizabeth thought it was stupid to own all these dresses with layers of material when they had soldiers out on the field freezing to death. Alexander blushed and took his hat off.
“Colonel Alexander Hamilton at your service madam.” Alexander ruffled his ginger hair that had been messed up under the hat.
“Elizabeth Schuyler and I accept your apology.” Elizabeth smiled at him and giggled at him blushing of embarrassment. Alexander glanced past her into the crowd.
“Are you looking for someone Colonel?” Elizabeth asked.
“Oh Schuyler, your name is Schuyler, is your father General Philip Schuyler, if so, do you know where he is, I need to speak with him.”
“I am right here young man.” Philip Schuyler walked over, tapping his shoulder, and Alexander turned and saluted.
“There’s no need, come.” Philip Schuyler lead him away to a side parlor.
“Pleasure to meet you again Miss Schuyler.” Alexander took her hand in his before following Mister Schuyler. Elizabeth smiled and waved after him, before weaving her way into the crowd. Amidst the happy crowd, Elizabeth felt a pang of sadness wash over her. She didn’t know why it came, all she knew was that it did.

Hamliza Month Day 10: Kisses
A bit late but it made my heart happy to draw this~
@mamapeggs
Snow fell to the ground, soft and white underneath Alexander’s feet. With a scarf wrapped around his nose, it was still red when he arrived home. Philip tried to say hi, but Alexander ignored any attempt of anyone talking to him. He made his way to the bedroom he shared with his wife, closing the door behind him.
Alexander took his scarf and gloves off, placing them on top of a dresser. Sitting on the bed, Alexander took a deep breath, falling back into the mattress. He grabbed a pillow and screamed into it, hoping no one heard his screams.
He knew someone did when Alexander heard footsteps walking up the stairs. Sitting up, he ruffled his ginger hair. The door creaked open and Elizabeth walked into the room and sat next to him.
“What’s wrong dear?”
“Do I always screw everything up?” Alexander asked hugging the pillow to him.
“No darling of course you don’t. You are an amazing husband and father.”
“What about a lawyer? Am I good lawyer?” Alexander asked in desperation.
“Honey, you are an amazing lawyer. Any of you clients are lucky to have you.” Elizabeth scooted as close as she could, placing her arms around his neck. Alexander gave in and pulled her into his lap hugging her.
“I am so lucky to have you as my wife.”
“And I am lucky to have you as my husband, now will come downstairs and say hi to our son?” Elizabeth asked kissing him.
“Of course, anything for you darling.”
Day 6 of Hamliza month and Wordcember.
Wordcember today was Atelophobia. The fear of not being good enough. As someone who has this fear, it was nice to let my emotions out in this small piece. And it was nice to have Elizabeth come and Comfort (day 6 of Hamliza month) Alexander ti make him feel better. I wish I had an Elizabeth.
@mamapeggs and @ historysalt I thank you guys so much for creating such a wonderful to celebrate an amazing couple
