    At the most basic level, the difference between hammer and striker fired mechanisms is how energy is transferred to the primer. In a hammer fired system, the strike of the hammer on the rear of the firing pin propels it forward with enough force to set off the primer. In a striker fired system, the striker (which is essentially a much heavier firing pin) is put under spring tension when the firearm is cocked, and when released, has enough force on its own to detonate the primer. 

    There are variations of each (double action/single action [DA/SA], double action only [DAO], single action only [SAO], safe action, etc.) but they all work on the same general principles. For CC, I personally prefer a DA/SA hammer fired pistol. The first shot is going to be on a heavy double action trigger pull similar to a Glock's weight, but following shots will be on a much lighter single action pull.
