A girl of the Hammer tribe in Southern Ethiopia. Hammer tribe women apply a mix of clay and butter on them, which makes their skin look reddish. They also apply a mix of soil, butter, and fat on their hair. The pointy necklace that this girl wears means that she is someone’s first wife. Hammer men often have multiple wives if they have enough cattle for the dowry.
Hammer tribe women in Omo Valley Ethiopia are not easy to photograph, especially in market days. The best way that I found to take candid photos of them was to invite a bunch of them to the local "bar" and buy them all their drinks (the bar has no "bar", no music and only one drinking option: Taj, the local "beer"). In this case at Dimeka market I bought drinks for two hours for about 30 women. They were reserved in the beginning but in the end they had a lot of fun and ended up loving me. iPhone video © Konstantino Hatzisarros 2014. www.konstantinophoto.com
After reading the latest issue of 'Green Lantern: The Animated Series' [#8], I just had to draw Mk'Abee of the Hammer Tribe. She is a beautifully-designed character, and one I wouldn't mind seeing in the animated series.
Seriously, Luciano Vecchio does a splendid job with illustrating the GLTAS comics. He should illustrate the rest to come!
