Finding the right recipe for a project means a lot of trial and error. Getting that balance between the proportions makes the difference -- and I think I nailed it with this new hook design.

A lady asked me for something to hold the birch branches she’ll be using as curtain rods and she needed a 3″ gap. She looked all over to find something that’d work, with no luck.... until she ran across Three Rivers Forge!

Now that she’s approved the design, I need to get her dozen knocked out and boxed up. Another day in the smithy -- another damsel in distress rescued from a life without iron goodness in it! Yea ME!

When a blacksmith needs to make a lot of circles of the same size, he makes a form to bend the hot iron around.

It might seem like a lot of work, but it’s actually far easier to make up a bending form than it is to try and bend the circles free-hand. And, now that the form is made, it can be hung on the wall to wait for future use.

With all the talk about trade wars and tariffs in the news, it was only a matter of time before someone asked me about how much it hurt my business. The truth, though, is that the tariff on foreign steel imports doesn’t do nearly as much harm as you’d think. Here at Three Rivers Forge, the cost increase is negligible.

What does hurt, and what is rarely talked about, is the taxes and regulations that go into the price of goods and services. According to Tax Freedom Foundation, the average American will have to work for more than three months to earn the money the government says they owe for that year’s taxes.

When you have that much of your earnings taken away, that’s less you have to spend on goods and services. I might run a small business, but I’m still a guy that has to pay for stuff just like anyone else. Taxes impact me on two fronts. If customers don’t have cash to burn, they don’t shop for awesome ironwork from Three Rivers Forge. Fewer customers means less cash in the pocket to go out for a night on the town, buy new tools, get some fresh produce, etc.

That little bit of steel in the picture cost me $55 and likely has at least $20 in taxes factored into the cost. The steel mill has to pay their taxes, but then they sell to a wholesaler who also has taxes that need to be covered. So, wholesaler increases the cost of the steel to cover all their operational costs, profit margin and tax burden. The retailer buys from the wholesaler and has to add in all their costs, including those pesky taxes again. Finally, the steel gets to me and I have to pay all sorts of taxes on it.

You wouldn’t think that the taxes are significant until you add it all up.
