bean iron ore colors I have 4 different kinds: 1)ore from my hometown Laucherthal, southwest Germany 2) ore from Otranto (Kremer pigments) 3) ore from the Swabian Alb, southwest Germany (Kremer pigments) 4)ferric bean ore clay Laucherthal I thinkbthe bean ore from Laucherthal contai s high amounts of Manganese oxides, thus the more Umber like color. The swatches were made using water and pigment only. Pigments I collect myself I prefer keeping in a rather coarse state in jars, so later when I make colors from them I can still decide if I want to grind the pigment to a finer state. new experiments with inks made from earth pigments and Becherovka Czech herb liquor. When water is added to the still wet paint on the paper, interesting structures appear. I think this might be due to a supposed precipitation of herb oils that are solved in the alcohol. When the solution is thinned by adding water, the alcohol is no longer able to keep the oils in solution. Probably same effect like that of Ouzo becoming white when water is added. I got the idea from Heidi Gustafson when she posted she is making inks from ouzo. After testing a very cheap brand of ouzo, it turned out that the Becherovka I already had here as a gout medicine worked better as a binder for the pigments. -new selfmade acrylic colors (Persian Red Occhre and synthetic iron oxide pigments), -acrylic and watercolors painting in progress, -current acrylic painting workspace, -self made acrylic stay wet palette and watercolors made from earth pigments, -and my favorite pigment at the moment, which is Persian Red Ochre from Hormus (available from Kremer pigments). I use it also for painting flutes since this summer, mixed into shellac.
