Hand reaming the seat tube on one of our titanium Eros frames. This takes time and a good amount of physical energy but it's what we mean when we say #handmadeindenver . #alchemybicycles #bespoke #bikeporn
The best part about this company is the ability to create. To draw inspiration from the world around me, have an idea from all of that inspiration, draw something out and watch it painfully come to life. I say painfully because it doesn't always transfer that easily from my mind, to a physical product. There are a lot of mess ups, a lot of cutting, a lot of prototypes, and then finally a finished product.
I've always wanted to create a wallet. I love the idea that my dad used to carry a wallet that had 50+ cards in it, and his checkbook. And somehow, that brick would fit in his back pocket, and go everywhere with him. (How his back isn't warped from that I'll have no idea. He still has 50+ cards in his wallet, but has abandoned the check book in the past decade or so.) And now, a generation later, we want to carry as little as possible. I have at most 4 cards I carry, including my drivers license, and very rarely any cash. So I wanted to create something that reflected that. And reflected the way the culture is going.
We chose waxed canvas for this wallet simply because the way it feels. It wears really well, and feels extremely classy in your hands. I love all the inconsistencies and folds in the fabric, so to me it was a simple choice.
Everything begins as panels. You can see that it's way easier if you look at what you want it to look like, and pick it apart in your mind. That way when you go to make a prototype, it turns into into a much simpler process.
Once I like the panels, everything starts getting put together.

This is with the binding on. I chose binding because it keeps the wallet slim and covers up any edging that might fray.
This is in the machine. I have to line up everything and make sure that the stitching stays straight. It's taken me over 40+ hours of sewing to really get to know my machine. It takes time and patience, which sometimes I don't have.
I added a vinyl layer on this round because in the prototype I hated having to take my idea out all the time. This vinyl is extremely cheap, but highly effective. The seam has to be a little bit further in, because the foot on my machine would stick to the vinyl and make it impossible to sew.
Now that everything is put together, all that's left is turning it inside out, sewing and flipping. Only problem is, I am waiting for the leather tabs to put on it, so it is finished for now. Once I get the leather tab, I will sew on the other side of the fabric, then put the whole product together.
