Taking a break from discussing food to discussing the pigment highlight of this month which is Permanent Alizarin Crimson from Daniel Smith. Apart from the fact that it layers beautifully and that it's smooth and transparent with quite strong variation of value ranges, it mixes so gorgeously with Sap Green and Phthalo Green and with my favorite green: Undersea Green (also from Daniel Smith). When mixed with the latter the deep burgundies and chocolate browns are deep and harmonious while the Undersea Green gives them specs of blue and green, just a treat to the eyes. Let's talk abouuuut... Van Dyke Brown! Van Dyke Brown was the first professional grade pigment I played with and it was the one to convince me to make the switch. It's marvelous elasticity in water and it's intense opacity and elegant granulation made me realize there might be a world of watercolor out there that I am missing out on! I use quite a fair bit of Van Dyke Brown, it's a personal favorite, but I rarely mix it unless I want to "borrow" it's spreadability. When mixed in with high granulating pigments and applied wet in wet, the granulating pigment will stay put and do its job, while Van Dyke Brown will spread like fireworks! I absolutely love to work with this pigment from Sennelier, and I gladly recommend it, especially if you love to paint with more natural tones, because it can be used to reprezent the color of the earth or furr and skin textures in animals. I have been preparing a little surprise for you... can you guess what it is? 😋 If you want to know more, well - you know me - always "spilling the beans" for the love of it. This absolutely gorgeous sketchbook is handmade and I got it for a more than fair price from @lauers_place. It's incredibly beautiful and so precious I actually spent weeks just thinking about how I should handle it to avoid any possible damage. I finally broke it in and I just cannot wait to show you what this project is about. One hint: I'm not using it as a regular sketchbook... more like a journal.
