So, it's been a couple of days since I last posted something. I wasn't feeling well, and after that I was really busy with writing and school. I finally had the chance to update my #writingjournal today, and I'm kinda proud of what I accomplished. My total #wordcount is 34002 now and I started with part two of my story. Here's my #onebookjuly flip through! I used the challenge to teach myself the value of a pen. I want a beautiful pen, but I have lots of not so beautiful pen habits, like loosing and chewing on them. I'm proud to say that the two pens I used are in just as good condition now as they were when I bought the three pack from Marshalls (except for one that is empty of ink and the other which is almost empty)! And I didn't loose them!! This is my primary notebook, but I used my one pen for all my writing this month. Knitting notes, boring work notes, in my recipe book, in my car to write down directions, literally every single thing I wrote in July was with one of these two pens. This challenge was great. I miss the color, so I've gone back to colors. But I'm going to thin the pen drawer a lot and try to invest in some quality pens and markers. And I'm gonna start looking at beautiful pens, especially beautiful handmade pens. 5/18/17 - What I want to see (in novels)

What I want to see more of in novels (but especially romances):

Diverse leads who are written as interesting, well-rounded human beings

Women in control of their stories

Characters whose body autonomy is not violated as a plot device with the consequences neatly swept away

Stories written in a man’s POV showing him vulnerable, and not toxic, in love

Consent as part of foreplay

LGBQT characters written without stereotypes and being the heroes of their own stories (read: stop killing them off)

Characters with PTSD depicted as having healthy, rewarding relationships 

Characters who aren’t afraid to ask for help or go to a therapist when they need support

Established couples having sexy times

Relationships formed between people who are divorced

Single parent leads

Couples over the age of 30 being successful in their relationships

Leads who are not necessarily wealthy and privileged. Give me a romance between a low-income, working-class couple, unemployed folks, people who have been laid off and are struggling. Because everybody deserves a good story.

From a short story I'm simply calling “White” for now.

“The coqui begin their strange name-calling, their musical tempo dives inside my body and pulses through the muscles of my thighs, through the tips of my ears, to the pads of my fingers.

That night, when I sleep, I dream of him. When he opens his mouth, it is the trilling sound of the coqui that swallows up the night. He kisses me with a mouth as smooth and ripe as papayas. I think he speaks to me in Spanish but not the Spanish of my grandmother scolding me to cross my legs for the sake of decency. His Spanish is fluent, unbroken and though I miss some words, my body understands and opens beneath a sky heavy with clouds the color of white linen tinged with ochre, like the tiles of the Plaza of Santa Maria, the heart of Ponce.”

Phases

There are two of you, 

Training ground for how to be

Both complete and fragmented.

I am me but I am also your mother.

I belong to me but I also belong to you.

There is enough of me for a multitude,

Yet sometimes, I am barely enough for myself.

The moon goes through phases - 

New, waxing, full, waning,

With some quarters and halves in between -

So is the trajectory of my love,

How the heart empties,

Knowing it will become full again.
