Feast your eyes on these beautiful Medieval manuscripts!

I was taking these pictures for a completely unrelated project, but I thought I would be nice and share. These manuscripts were definitely workin’ their best sides for the camera.

This stunning edition of The Tale of Beowulf is bound in Niger goatskin and adorned in boarders of dark brown acanthus leaves. Inside, the type is reminiscent of medieval manuscripts, with ornate page boarders, decorated letters, and red printing.

Also, it appears that the back cover may be haunted?

This zine, called Choose Your Own Moral Code: A Coloring Book, is from our Zine Machine Collection. This collection is comprised of zines from a vending machine that was at the University of Iowa Main Library for more than 10 years that was set up by Jessica White, the creator of this zine. A vending machine was repurposed to sell zines instead of candy bars and energy drinks. This zine acts as a coloring book, allowing the reader to color in and choose what they believe is good or evil. Rabbits and squirrels seem to be the main subjects of these moral dilemmas. 

The last page is blank, leaving the reader to create their “own conclusions.”

So I decided to draw my very own:

This beautiful edition of Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll is part of a series called “Visions in Poetry” produced by Kids Can Press. The surreal and beautiful illustrations in this book were drawn by Stéphane Jorisch, a Canadian illustrator who does work for children’s books, magazines, and Cirque du Solieil. You can read more about him here.

Despite being a children’s poem, Jorisch’s illustrative interpretation of Jabberwocky lends a darker twist to the tale, balancing on a thin line between reality and fantasy.

This hand-sewn, four volume set is about hand-made Korean paper called Hanji. Each volume explains a different method of paper making, the region of Korea in which the type of paper was made, and contains full-page paper samples. The paper samples can be seen along the foredge of the book, creating a beautiful collage of color and texture. 

In the publisher’s colophon, Hanji is explained as a paper made from the “mulberry trees that naturally grew by the fields, the creeks, and the mountainsides. Hanji resembles the natural beauty of Korean landscape.”

This beautiful folio, called Edo Tōkyō Kamisukishi Kō by Yoshikuni Seki, is about the history and techniques of paper making in Tokyo, Japan. The book includes vibrant illustrations of the paper making process, including the creation of the pulp (second image down from the top) and soaking the pulp in water (left image second from the bottom). It also has various Japanese paper samples that have been pasted inside the book. Featured are just a few of my favorites.

It’s another #MiniatureMonday!

This week’s feature is this amazing pop-up book called PEPYS Pops-Up: Moving Events from the Diaries of SAMUEL PEPYS, Esq 1660-1667. Samuel Pepys was an administrator of the English Navy and a parliament member. This miniature pop-up book illustrates different entries from his diary, including a theater performance, a public hanging, and a beautiful landscape of London. Kept in a painted wooden box, this red-leather pop-up book is truly a piece of art.

#MiniatureMonday is here again, and today we’re featuring an edition of Lewis Carroll’s The Pig Tale. This little tale is vividly told with hand-colored illustrations by Anne Easley. I would have to say that the dapper frog is my favorite among the illustrations in the book.
