@eloquated
Because I love them.
The first thing Hannibal ever heard Mycroft play was the Goldberg Variations, unprompted. His hands moving across the keys with the same familiar, graceful ease as his own.
That was the moment he knew he was going to have to keep Mycroft around… Suddenly, the quiet man in the bespoke suit was much more interesting.

Hannibal had known for years that he loved Will Graham.
He’d known it since he’d first seen the man standing bloody in Hobbs’ kitchen. Since he watched him twitch and sweat and struggle to save Abigail.
Hannibal knew he loved Will. He had accepted this, and he had moved past it. Three years in isolation gave one plenty of time to move on.
He had not, however, expected to move on to someone else.
Now, sitting in the spare bedroom of Mycroft Holmes’ London house, listening to the faint sounds of the other man having a nightmare, he was having a crisis.
He couldn’t afford to be sentimental. It had not gotten him far, before. Now, a wanted criminal on the run, having broken out of a psychiatric institution and escaped inevitable death at the hands of Will Graham and Francis Dolarhyde, he had even less time for something as silly as affection.
But it was so hard to ignore.
Hannibal was not a sociopath. He felt, and he felt deeply. He cried at Operas. He sang to himself while he cooked. He loved art, and music, and he hated those who dismissed him as less of a man for it. Those were people who ended up on the wrong end of his dinner table.
Unfortunately, this deep sense of emotion also applied to people. He’d loved Will like a partner, loved Abigail like a daughter, even cared for Alana to some degree. And now, here he was, slowly developing feelings for his host.
It was hard to ignore the way the other man challenged him, a constant puzzle laced with quick wit and low morals and everything Hannibal adored.
The man was clearly disgusted by touch, as well, which Hannibal could work with. It meant little pretending to be interested in things like close contact. He only used touch as a manipulative tool, with the exception of a few vaguely pleasurable touches, such as more platonic ones (and kisses, which Hannibal was exceptionally fond of).
In short, he was perfect, and Hannibal had no idea what to do with it.
He resolved to work with Mycroft, exercising his skills in subtle manipulation, to see if he could get the man interested.
If not, he’d call it a failed experiment, and hopefully it wouldn’t take three years to straighten back out this time.
