HaoRen AU: Summary 💞

A SK rewrite AU originally made by me and my friend Cinna in 2022.

A dark evil SK AU where Ren is never redeemed, and finds another type of salvation with Hao.

A corrupted Ren AU, where Hao (the main villain of SK and most powerful shaman), ends up finding Ren before Yoh (the SK protagonist), and eventually convinces him to join him as his ally.

Ren kills his dad En, aided by Hao (who encourages his bloodlust), becomes Hao's right hand, and they fall in love ❤️

I had an idea of Hao leaning in to kiss him while grabbing his wrist and pinning him to the wall… 😌

I'd love to draw that ofc, but that'd take some more effort.

I'm busy with school atm, so I just did a few quick doodles for now. 👍

I'm trying to get the hang of drawing SK charas in my style, so I can draw more for our HaoRen AU ✌️

Redrew the faces in like 20 minutes. Softened the proportions and made the eyes bigger.

I think the new version fits more. The eyes feel more expressive

I still have to redraw some stuff, but I like it a lot more ✌️

Decided to draw the charas with softer facial features than I usually do

I think Hao's chara design fits the best without ringed eyes (considering how his eyes are just drawn in canon), but the version with ringed eyes is also nice too

Boston: "He had his flaws but he also had his reasons! He deserved some of his ending, because of his actions, yes. But it was way too much just for not having the same view on relationships as everyone else."

"Sure Boston was a bit of a dick (sleeping with a friend’s boyfriend) but he didn’t deserve the treatment he got in the show. He got non-consensually recorded for porn and then was blackmailed by a friend with it. Pretty much all of the Only Friends characters did shitty things but only Boston is unfriended by the group because he was being a bit of a slut. And arguably what Boston did was actually less worse than a lot of the other characters on the show. The retribution he received was incredibly disproportionate."

"Look... was he an asshole? Sure. But the only person he actually deserved ill treatment from was Mew. He did not owe Nick, Top, Cheum or Atom ANYTHING. His privacy was violated multiple times, even though he was always clear about how he wanted things and how important consent was to him. He did not ask Nick to fall for him either, and it was Top who was in an actual relationship and went behind Mew's back to cheat on him. Yeah, i do think that he shouldn't have gone for a guy his friend was interested in because bro code, BUT HE GOT WAY WORSE THAN HE DESERVED."

Haoren: "Sexually abused as a child. Abandoned by his mother. Lived on the streets with nothing to call his own. Gets sex trafficked. Is repeatedly sexually, physically, mentally abused, starved and even gets many severe injuries that require surgery because of the sex trafficking. Escapes from the trafficker but cannot escape that life. His only friend is the guy who trafficked him in the first place. Finds his "mother" again but she doesnt remember him. Still gives her money. She kills herself with no warning. Has to be on the run all the time. Is almost killed at least 10 times, by others or himself. Has to go to jail even though he is a victim. Has to leave the love of his life and lives with zero hope of having him waiting for him outside of jail. He went through enough torture in one life than most characters go through in ten. (If he doesn't win this bracket i will kill) (/hj)"

Intro

First time posting about SK publically, so I'll make a bit of an intro first.

I'm Sen, and my fave SK characters are Asakura Hao and Tao Ren ❤️💜⭐🪷

HaoRen is my fave SK ship ❤️💜⭐🪷

I first read SK in 2021. HaoRen is the rare pair ship that my friend Cinna and I came up with and made an AU together for, and it is our fave SK ship.

Origin of this ship: Galaxy brained too hard with a friend, and came up with a rare pair for our SK fix-it/rewrite AU that fixes the majority of our writing criticisms with the series.

I also love Horohoro, and I enjoy Jeanne and Lyserg too.

I also love HoroRen and RenMei ^^ They are my secondary Ren multiships 💗

(Note: I tend to post my discussions with friends as ramble posts. It feels more authentic for me personally compared to just summing them up.)

So the main posts you'll see from me is rambles centered around my faves, and Ren multiships AU rambles (ie. art, writing ideas, dialogue scripts, discussions, etc.)

I created a HaoRen AU with my friend Cinna, where Ren is never redeemed and finds another form of salvation with Hao 🥰

Hao finds Ren before Yoh, so he becomes one of Hao’s subordinates instead.

Our SK AU's premise is that it's an evil AU where Ren is never redeemed and is picked up by Hao instead of Yoh.

We have Ren killing his shitty abusive dad En, aided by Hao, and eventually Ren becomes Hao's right hand and they fall in love 🥰💞💘

I started shipping them as my rare pair based on SK: Ch. 135 and the SK 2021 anime’s depiction of this scene (Ep. 23)

Their potential together is so tasty!

Me: Their expressions here are peak af too.

C: It's a really cool one since it's like. The only time. Hao personally approaches Ren. And we get to actually see a bit of how insecure and afraid he is, but how he covers it with his rage. Also a major scene since it's where he loses the Basontou (his guandao that originally belonged to Bason)

That first Hao scene you posted from Ch. 232 is so goated, it's one of my absolute favourite lines from him. I love it SO much.

God bless Hao for being the most efforted SK chara in terms of writing (imo) and for being a complex and layered, well-written antagonist/villain with incredibly good reasoning and morals.

C: Early Ren's mindsets REALLY match with Hao's

C: So I'm way down for a evil SK AU (corruption AU) where he (Ren) finds salvation in different ways with Hao.

Hao and early Ren can definitely relate to each other with how they saw unspeakable horrors/trauma from a young age.

With Ren having a very isolated childhood and Hao's "corruption" (in some regards) and perceived "inhuman-ness" distancing themselves from others

C: YEAHHH

For a corrupted Ren AU, you really wouldn't need anything more than Hao finding Ren before Yoh

Me: Hao's followers are a group of maligned people. They (Hao and Ren) would definitely relate to each other and find some resonance in each other with their upbringings/circumstances

Hao ends up finding out that Ren is more similar to him than he thought deep down inside. They're both terribly lonely.

Misc Rambles

I've been cycling back into my SK: HaoRen AU lately because I miss them... Hao and Ren are my top fave SK charas. HaoRen is my fave SK ship 😌❤️💜 I also love HoroRen and RenMei too! 💗

I really want to draw that one scene where Hao tells Ren, "But one day, you'll be mine..."

I eventually wanna draw HaoRen in both my usual style and cartoony style. I'm trying to get used to drawing SK charas in my style... I'll post them on my main (@/stepswordsen) once I do.

I'm usually into Protagonist/Antagonist ships (as long as they have interesting compelling dynamics and make sense) cuz I always tend to prefer ships with more contrast (and cuz 2 meow meow mfs together usually tend to clash in unappealing ways imo)

I always go for Evil Meow Meow Mf x Soft empathetic S/O with a brighter disposition (ex. LimGuda (FGO), JuAli (Magi), XanLena (KHR AU), KuroEne (KagePro), IdaTatsu (WATGBS AU))

I love Sun/Moon/Eclipse, Light/Darkness (Darkness/Shadow cannot exist without light), Yin/Yang, Protagonist/Antagonist, Protagonist/Rival, Opposites Attract, Seemingly Opposites - Deep Down So Similar, Narrative Opposites/Parallels, Angel/Devil, Soulmates ™️ ships

However... HaoRen is so tasty.

HaoRen, a ship between 2 meow meow mfs, is the perfect rare pair ship in SK for me between my top fave characters, so it is my fave SK ship. It is extremely Sen-core.

I just had the thought come to me but one thing that sets apart the dynamics of my beloved SK rare pair, HaoRen, compared to other “King x Vassal/Retainer” and “Antagonist x Antagonist” dynamics that involve two charas trying to destroy the world (as a way of lashing out against the world for their traumas), is the fact that Hao distancing himself from his own humanity with his goal of wanting to make a kingdom for Shamans (basically wanting to build a paradise in heaven for people he doesn't hate LMFAO, and become a being equivalent to a God), adds such interesting layers to the ship dynamic.

The power gap between Hao and other characters in SK is VAST and everyone inherently fears him for being terrifying.

Due to his immense furyoku (lit. "shamanic energy," translated as "mana" in Official TLs), and his Reishi (Mind reading ability)

And I think that's what makes Ren's decision to follow him in our HaoRen AU soooo interesting…

And I think it plays into that whole Sen-core trope I love with "Someone who was distanced from normal social interactions or humanity via their emotional repression and/or divinity/non-human status"

Ren was kept isolated due to the controlling abusive upbringing he had (Ren's childhood with his extremely physically and emotionally abusive family), so he clearly struggles with social interactions.

I love my SK faves deeply, but I have a lot of crits with the series' writing and distasteful handling of sensitive/heavy themes at times

So I'm not satisfied with some of SK's writing and the way some characters were handled/framed by the series' narrative, and how their character development/writing and character arc resolutions were handled.

My Fave Chara Tastes

My fave character tastes are characters who are: morally gray, evil, antagonists, villains, deuteragonists

So my fave taste in fictional charas is Meow Meow Mf ™️

"Meow meow mf" is an extremely specific character type that the majority of my top faves, including Hao and Ren, fall under.

I named it myself cuz it's the no. 1 Sen-core character type.

Meow Meow Mf: Morally Bankrupt and/or Morally Questionable Evil, (Optional: Black and White colour scheme), has sadistic and bloodthirsty tendencies, has emotional issues, is distanced from humanity and/or human social interactions in some way (estranged from normal people due to their childhood upbringing, or being non-human or divine, etc.) which gives their ego this "Sen-core quality"

I think the qualities of their arrogance and ego are what defines them as "Meow Meow Mf"

My fave charas often operate on "Evil/Shadow/Darkness" or Yin/Yang and Light/Darkness principles (usually embodying one of, or both aspects)

I love my black cats and tux cats 🐈‍⬛🖤🤍

Hao and Ren both fall under this character type, so they are my fave SK characters to me 🥰

Memorial Day - A candle for Kya

One of Gladiator’s most emotionally-charged scenes up to date took place in chapter 147. Within the story, the Fire Nation holds a week of festivals, and one of its days is Memorial Day: as is obvious, it’s a day meant for mourning the dead. There are two different rites, one meant to honor the most important people of the Fire Nation, for whom shrines are erected inside the Capital’s Temple (the Fire Lords, royals and nobles, military leaders, culturally-relevant poets and artists... alas, noteworthy people). The second rite is far more inclusive, and it’s based on one of the rites held in our world’s Ghost Festival, where lit lanterns are sent out in a body of water, with the name of the deceased carved on the candle.

While Sokka has adjusted to living in the Fire Nation over several years by then, he had never participated in this day of the festivals until that chapter. By the time he does, he’s most determined NOT to honor any of the Fire Lords in the first rite, but he does partake in the second rite, once Azula tells him there’s no way anyone will know who he’s lighting his candles for, meaning he’s free to light candles for non-Fire Nation people if he chooses to do so.

Azula helps him light his candles after lighting the ones she sent out for herself. For artistry’s sake I decided to have the candles retaining the color of the fire she used with each of them, so the gesture she does for Kya would be more apparent: Azula lights Kya’s with gold fire, paying the deepest respect she can to the brave Water Tribe woman. Her guards, who have grown fond of Sokka over the years, proceed to strike up the most respectful reverence possible when Sokka sends out that final candle, and Azula does it too. Sokka, of course, is emotionally wrecked, but hopeful that, if he has inspired Azula and her guards to change their worldview so much that they would respect Kya so deeply, then perhaps changing the world for the better isn’t an impossible dream to work towards.

The story doesn’t mention Kya is watching over Sokka as he sends out the candle... but I’d hope it’s implicit enough that his kind-hearted mother would be very proud of the great man he has become. So, when @gd2go2 commissioned this artwork and asked for a spirit Kya right behind Sokka, I cracked my knuckles and got to work at once. I had wanted to draw this scene someday, and I would have added it to the Festivals’ artwork back for the Seventh Anniversary, but it didn’t fit in the least with the mood of that particular artwork... so when this opportunity came knocking, I knew I had to do my very best with it. It’s one of my favorite scenes within one of my favorite arcs... so I hope I did it justice.

2024 vs. 2025

Selena is my Viet NB KHR OC. A soft and gentle person with a modest personality. Calm and aloof, but will open up more around people she's comfortable with. Gets rambly when talking about her interest in plants and fashion.

Likes fashion, historical fashion, and collecting traditional clothes, cute and pretty clothes (ex. girly fashion, lolita, etc.), and learning about plants (ex. plants, flowers, poisons, poisonous plants) and collecting them. Has her own personal garden.

As an assassin, she specializes in poison, and has plants that respond to her emotions to assist her in fights. I mainly ship her with Xanxus, the leader of the Varia ❤️💜

I have a lot more to say since I'm very passionate about her, but I will put Selena's info sheet in its own dedicated post.

Started resketching Selena's hair a bit. I'm pretty picky about my art, especially since I want to capture my beloved wife's beauty.

I want Selena's concept art to have a clearer silhouette and good shapes. I'll eventually redraw the rest of it, but I started with the hair for now.

I want Selena to have those wavy strands on the side. Looks very cute!

I had the lines as the 2nd one I was worried the 2 curls near her two front long strands would be hard to replicate, so I think these recent doodles are closer to what I wanted. I'll sketch a bunch, and pick the one I like most!

Also cuz I always imagined Selena to have a back of random hair strands in the back so I wanted to make space for that. I want her hair to be perfectly fluffy looking...

Magi: Judar wearing hanfu 🖤❤️🐈‍⬛ Magi: JuAli x Unfriendly Hater

Posting my fave Judar doodles here~

In my HCs, Judar wears a type of hanfu called Ruqun (襦裙). Ru (襦) is the cross-collared top of a hanfu, and the wrap-around skirt is called Qun (裙). The coat jacket is called Da Xiu Shan (大袖衫)

I love the expressions on these… I wanna resketch the hair and clothes sometime

I did tentative rain drop earrings for him but it'd be cool if he had gold and red earrings (gold with a red jewel) or snowflake/icicle themed earrings since Judar is an ice magic user

The 1st one I wanna use as a ref sheet eventually for my HC design of him in hanfu. I've been preferring to roughly block out the shape of his braids since Ohtaka draws his braids in a very stylized way. Obviously I'm gonna redraw it neater eventually but stylizing it this way honestly makes it way easier to draw.

I was trying to experiment with how I draw his hair. I also drew these which are interesting to see but the first two look the best

The other ones are interesting, but I think the 1st one captures the vibes more. I think I like the OG best but I'll be incorporating aspects from the others when I refine it.

Been redrawing the hair cuz I wanna settle on a hair shape I like.

I got recommendations to sketch via silhouettes first. It has interesting results :o

I got reminded that some people use lasso tool for quickly blocking in shapes so I tried that. I'll play around with it more sometime, but I like the clearer shapes.

I tend to get caught up in smaller details and always try to see if I can improve on my previous versions, and I like redrawing for fun

I still like the first one too ^^ Sketching with silhouettes was a nice change of pace, I should try it more often.

I like how spiky the hair looks in the 1st one. I think it fits the best.

I'm planning for the 1st one to be a concept art ref sheet. I wanna commission arts of JuAli with my headcanon designs eventually, so I wanna have clean refs available.

Planning to add ice and snowflake patterns on his hanfu, and possibly a Chinese ice dragon.

For both Selena and Judar, I sketched a lot more than what I posted. I just picked out the ones that looked the best to me.

I think the 1st one looks the best and has the best silhouette, so I decided to go with that. The others look cute too though!

KagePro: Kuroha/Saeru wearing Viet traditional clothes (2024) 🖤💛🐍

Haven't drawn his clothes yet but I plan to make him wear Viet clothes…

Something something I feel like doing a Kuroha/Saeru MR2 (Manga Route 2) redesign with more influence from traditional clothes (including Viet traditional clothes). WIP for now since I've been busy with school. I haven't drawn clothes on him yet.

I think I will resketch Saeru's pose in the 1st one eventually. I originally drew it in October. I'm planning for this doodle to be Kuroha/Saeru wearing Viet traditional clothes.

Cuz I fuck with everything on this design EXCEPT for the canon design's crop top. I love the black snake scales on his face, the cute little tufts of hair and black horns, the braid in the back that looks like a scorpion's tail like Judar's, red sclera and red gradient limbs, and the white sash with bloodstains on it.

Since Azami is Saeru's creator, I'll be incorporating more of Azami's traditional clothes inspired outfit onto his design~ Since the slit in Azami's outfit also reminds me of some Viet traditional clothes like Áo dài ("Long dress")

Pretty indecisive how I want to draw his hair, but I settled on the 1st one since it looked the best to me.

It has better weight to them and I like the roundness + spikes combined. The pose is tentative for now too

I'm planning to draw both the normal form and MR2 (Manga Route 2) form with this outfit.

I love Saeru with black painted nails HC~ It just feels so natural 😌

I think in MR2 Saeru's design, the horns are blunt to match the shape of Black Konoha's usual headphones.

I think MR2 Saeru with black pointy horns looks cute! I like how it evokes a devil's image.

Fits him since villains are usually designed with pointy shapes and sharp shape language since it evokes a feeling of danger.

Though it'd be fun to play around with the shapes of his horns!

KagePro: Femme Kuroha/Saeru (2025) 🖤💛🐍

I drew my buff NB genderfluid Saeru HC!

I like thinking of femme Saeru having rather messy hair and a long ponytail in the back that's wavy like a snake shape…

I didn't want her hair to look too round so I kept the usual bangs, but made her hair messy.

I tried re-imagining my buff NB genderfluid Kuroha/Saeru HC!

I drew the bottom one much quicker so it's not as refined but it gets the idea down

Since Kuroha/Saeru can use Awakening Eyes to change his body to whatever he pleases, and is able to rebuild its body completely, I imagine Saeru switches between genders and has a fluid sense of self. Though he has a certain affinity to being masc-aligned. Mainly presents as masc.

Most femme Saeru fan designs I see have her as more cutesy femme with a skirt, but I wanted her to have a more ikemen look and still look really menacing and dangerous.

My friend Feila said they think it fits genderfluid femme Saeru to be more androgynous and still wear the usual clothes with the pants and boots

KagePro: KuroEne 🖤💙🐍🐇 Like a snake possessive over its gold. 🐍🐇🍎💛

So my idea was KuroEne with Ene with artistic/barbie doll esque nudity after she first gained her cyber body and snake mark texture imprints inspired off the X-ray arts by Sidu.

And I wanted to a cut-in shot of draw Kuroha/Saeru biting into a golden apple which symbolizes immortality 🍎💛

I think it’s interesting cuz this kind of piece would also convey Kuroha/Saeru’s obsessiveness and possessiveness as a character. Both over what he doesn’t want to let go at all costs (pseudo immortality), and his S/O.

I also like to think of it as Kuroha/Saeru leaving his marks on his S/O throughout the time loops with how he keeps memories of past Routes (timelines)

I haven't drawn Kuroha yet, so I just drew Ene for now in a more chibi esque style. Might play around with the brushes...

Been thinking of a potential KuroEne art piece with Ene with artistic nudity/Barbie doll esque nudity where it's Ene right after she gained her cyber body with snake scale marks/texture imprints on her body (on her thighs and wrists, etc.) and in the background shot is a side profile shot of Kuroha/Saeru holding and biting into a golden apple

I was inspired by the concept of using an “X-ray to see fingerprints” 🩻

And the bite marks too... Hehehehe

I'm kinda surprised that he's one of the easiest charas for me to draw of my meow meow mf faves to draw despite the spiky hair. He and Kuroha/Saeru are the easiest for me

Think it's cuz I finally settled on a hair shape for him that's easily readable, has a recognizable shape. Bigger shapes are generally easier to read. I love the thin spikes at the top/bottom, and the big wide spikes in the middle. Creates nice visual contrast.

Just scribbled the clothes for now cuz my main concern is making the face look nice first. I will resketch the hair later

I've been cycling back into my SK: HaoRen AU lately because I miss them... Hao and Ren are my top fave SK charas. HaoRen is my fave SK ship 😌❤️💜 I also love HoroRen and RenMei too! 💗

Quickly redrew an old doodle. I'm trying to get used to drawing SK charas in my style... I wanted to draw that one scene of Hao telling Ren, "But one day, you'll be mine..."

I wanna draw HaoRen in both my usual style and cartoony style.

I'm usually into Protagonist/Antagonist ships (as long as they have interesting compelling dynamics and make sense) cuz I always tend to prefer ships with more contrast (and cuz 2 meow meow mfs together usually tend to clash in unappealing ways imo)

I always go for Evil Meow Meow Mf x Soft empathetic S/O with a brighter disposition (ex. LimGuda (FGO), JuAli (Magi), XanLena (KHR AU), KuroEne (KagePro), IdaTatsu (WATGBS AU))

I love Sun/Moon/Eclipse, Light/Darkness (Darkness/Shadow cannot exist without light), Yin/Yang, Protagonist/Antagonist, Protagonist/Rival, Opposites Attract, Seemingly Opposites - Deep Down So Similar, Narrative Opposites/Parallels, Angel/Devil, Soulmates ™️ ships

However... HaoRen is so tasty.

HaoRen, a ship between 2 meow meow mfs, is the perfect rare pair ship in SK for me between my top fave characters, so it is my fave SK ship. It is extremely Sen-core.

I just drew over an SS of the original Additional Memory MV by Sidu cuz I didn't want to draw the Engine Room, etc.

The song is morbid and has such repressed yearning/longing, I think is so fitting for Akechi.

I assume Sidu is using Blender + Ad*be After Effects (or something similarly powerful) to do the 3D effects with the moving desks and Chrysanthemums (Kiku)

That's why I had a vision of it as a crossover as Akechi's POV with subtle AkeShu...

So so so delicious with the 3rd semester's context and Akechi's feelings towards Joker and denying his own feelings.

Something about the way these charas will let themselves be sacrificed (ie. Akechi in Shido's Palace in P5) for the sake of a loved one...

Also, Akechi has brown/red-toned eyes and is also associated with the colour RED like Ayano.

It fits Akechi well. You could also include the subtle AkeShu (Akechi/Joker) in it...

Debating what pupils to draw Hao with… I've been drawing charas with ringed eyes lately cuz I love that design trope. Judar (Magi) canonically has it, and I added it onto Kuroha/Saeru (KagePro)

I suck at drawing non-adult charas honestly especially cuz my style was inspired by Amano's style for KHR, which has a very seinen looking art style.

Charas end up looking older in Amano's style too

Combined with how SK charas have chibi proportions for the way faces and bodies are drawn, so I have to think how to adapt my style to it.

I think I'm settling into a style I like for drawing SK charas ^^

It's inchresting to see SK charas drawn with a more mature looking art style.
