Touch In Mine (fingers) - Esperanza Spalding
“Touching surfaces every day
Feeling no spark of tenderness within”
Sally is a very sensitive person, both physically and emotionally: loud sounds, bright lights, strong smells can overwhelm her easily, as well as angry words and open displays of aggression. That is partly why she keeps to herself, to her routines, to her little comfortable bubble; but as she has become older, Sally finds that this existence is now wearing her down, and has come to realize that, even with the friendship of Jack (who is so often locked up in his own world as well) and Zero (who, much like her, keeps to himself), she craves affection and love that, so far, hasn’t experienced neither from family nor friends.
Like Someone In Love - Björk
“Each time I look at you, I'm limp as a glove
And feeling like someone in love”
Just a little love song that very accurately depicts Sally’s sort of clumsiness towards her own feelings, and how she feels she could express them towards a loved one. It is a beautiful, if rather awkward, way to feel for her, one that sticks to her mind and heart and colors her world, filling her with conflicting emotions -giddiness of being lovestruck, fear of being found out, sadness at the inevitability of vulnerability, hopefulness at the chance of being requited.
Your Woman - White Town
“Now I know your heart, I know your mind
You don't even know you're being unkind
So much for all your highbrow Marxist ways
Just use me up and then you walk away
Boy, you can't play me that way”
Even though this is a break up song between a romantic couple, this could very well reflect Sally and her father’s codependent relationship. With no family beyond him, no other place to go and with her low-paying job, Sally is basically dependent on her father for everything; and, similarly, her father, being in a wheelchair and stubbornly determined on never leaving Redwood Hollow, depends on Sally for everything he cannot do himself. Sally does recognize her father’s brilliant mind, his cultured thoughts, his well-read expertise and knowledge, but even though he spouts a philosophy of mutual aid, of small-town solidarity and community that he passed down to his daughter, Sally knows deep down this is pure bull -when he himself seems to regard her as a slave, something he owns and is in his right to mistreat, withholding any sort of affection or praise or kindness, treating her more like a robot than as a child.
Glory Box - Portishead
“Sow a little tenderness
No matter if you cry
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be a woman
I just wanna be a woman”
Going back to the first song, what Sally wants most is affection, and that means vulnerability both from her part and from whom the affection comes from. Since she was very little she has learned to keep her emotions in check, not asking for much, never be a nuisance. This has also led to her feeling somehow disconnected from her own self, from her gender and age, as well as from society at large. Now that she has arrived to her thirties, Sally feels like she needs to break out of this subservient position she has been chained to, and that means, in part, reclaiming her own self as a person with autonomy, as someone capable of and deserving of love, and as a woman with the capacity to socialize with others, to be nurturing, to be affectionate; and, as well, partly resenting her status as a woman as someone who needs to fulfill that nurturing role, to provide for her father, to cook and clean and do the domestic chores.
Sounds Of Blue - Morcheeba
“A sort of stoned silence
Sat on that boat floating out
The waters left me open
All my emotions fog my lenses”
Despite acknowledging her own sensitiveness, Sally isn’t very good with emotions; she knows the basics of comforting, to leave her shoulder free for someone else to cry on, to be available and listen to someone in need; but she is awful at managing her own frustrations and despair, choosing instead to bottle it all. Sometimes, it can feel almost asphyxiating, to be so full with words she can’t pronounce, with nowhere to pour them. This often makes Sally feel even more alone, like a boat in the middle of the ocean. As she grows older, though, she has begun to try her best and be mindful of what she feels; instead of simply allowing the emotions to overwhelm her, Sally tries to question them, to dive deeper and find the root cause, even if that means giving in and having to have a good long cry about it.
Walking In The Rain - The Ronettes
“When he's near me, I'll kiss him
And when he leaves me, woah, oh, oh, I'll miss him
Though sometimes we'll fight, I won't really care
And I'll know it's gonna be alright 'cause we've got so much we share”
Sally would like to think of herself as the practical sort; but, of course, this doesn’t mean she has a romantic side as well. Being raised by her father, homeschooled, with no distraction beyond books and constantly monitored TV watching, she grew up during her teens with a strong idea of what true love is like: it is instant, it is irresistible, it is everlasting, it is passionate, it is destined... As an adult, she knows this isn’t realistic at all (especially having witnessed, from a distance, the romantic troubles of the rest of the town); but a part of her still wishes she could be whisked away by a prince, somewhere far away, to an idyllic world of tenderness and freedom.
Good Morning Heartache - Billie Holiday
“Stop haunting me now
Can't shake you, no how
Just leave me alone
I've got those Monday blues
Straight through Sunday blues”
Kind of a byproduct of her buried-deep-down idealizations of love, and her repressed emotions and expectations, the weight of Sally’s loneliness can sometimes pull her down to periods of depression. As a full-time worker, both as her father’s caretaker and in her work at Jack’s Attic and in the Community Events Committee, Sally often has to put on a happy face to deal with the daily grind; but, once she has some time alone, she either tries to keep herself distracted, or gives in to that despair for as long as she can allow herself to.
Les Fleurs - Minnie Riperton
“For all of these simple things and much more, a flower was born
It blooms to spread love and joy, faith and hope to people forlorn”
Most of all, Sally feels most comfortable in nature: as at home as she is in her own house, it also feels, increasingly so, as a place of repression, lack of change, and constant surveillance. Nature, especially Redwood Park and the surrounding woodland, feels to Sally as the place where change is required, where it is most clear, where it is most, well, natural. Whether it is a rainy day with the air thick with humidity and the tension of a coming thunderstorm, a sunny afternoon having a small picnic at the shade of a tree in full bloom, or a lovely, glittering snow morning, snowflakes falling quietly and magically from a cotton-clouded sky, Sally loves it when she can be outside, forget about her responsabilities and duties, and focus on the sensation of the world, the real world, around her.
Day Dreaming - Aretha Franklin
“He's the kind of guy that would say
Hey, baby, let's get away
Let's go some place, huh
Where I don't care”
This is also a continuation of her own ongoing matureness and acknowledging of how she tends to idealize the idea of love. Sally tries her best to reject her old teenage conception of a prince coming to sweep her off her feet, but at the same time, especially when she can allow herself some time to doze off and daydream, she still nurses that little hope that, whoever it is that will come along and give her the affection she wants so bad, will wish, just as she does, to explore the world beyond Redwood -it doesn’t matter where, since they would be together, mutually helping each other in their struggles, loving and trusting each other, and that would be everything they would need.
Please Don’t Make Me Cry - Lianne La Havas
“I'll try to let it go, my fingers are crossed
I show you my pretty scars, they make us whatever we are”
Sally knows fully well that she comes with a good deal of issues, and that’s what scares her most when considering pursuing a romantic relationship. She is, however, aware enough of her traumas that she feels she could be honest about it -of course, as long as she manages to not let herself be drowned by them. Honesty is a very important quality for her. The only problem, then, is that while Sally truly wants to confess just how much she feels what has happened to her, she is still afraid to intimidate someone else, to be seen as “high-maintenance”, as someone hard to love. Once more, while love is her goal, vulnerability is her greatest fear.
For our second task, it’s time for some good old-fashioned mixed tapes. Music always helps me get into character and figure out the moods their going through (and I love expanding my Spotify playlists with y’all’s music too~) There are two options for this task, it is your choice if you do both options or just one.
Part One:
Create a playlist between 6 and 10 songs that you feel best describe your character. These songs either give off the vibe of your character, or lyrically describe different aspects of their life.
Part Two:
Create a playlist that your character would listen to. I know that my characters all have very different musical tastes from one another, and different songs mean different things to them, just like us. Using the criteria below, build a playlist of songs that your character would choose to answer.
Their favourite song
A song they listen to when sad or upset
A song they listen to when they are happy or need a cheer up
The first song they would put on in the car on a long drive
A song from their childhood
A song that represents a significant relationship (e.g. a best friend, their parents or their romantic interest)
The song they belt out when they’re alone and no one can hear them
Their karaoke song
And finally, a song they absolutely hate!
To share these playlists, you can either make a Spotify or Youtube playlist and link it, you can make a graphic with the set-list on it, or you can make a post listing or linking the songs. It would also be great if you mention why you chose those specific songs too!
Please tag your posts with #happiestplacetask and #happiestplacetask2 so everyone can see. This is not a mandatory task, and can be completed at any time.
Note, this was inspired by a task in another RP I was in a while back but the post/ RP is no longer available to link.
“so I'm livin' my life on a budget, tryna find love, but I don't want a lover who, I'm only gonna love when I'm wasted, I want something sacred, I want something amazing, and I'm going through changes”
Babette wants love in her life. A stable and long lasting love. She realises that she’s grown as a person and what (and who) she once wanted is not the same anymore.
Post Malone - Circles
“seasons change and our love went cold, feed the flame 'cause we can't let go, run away, but we're running in circles”
This represents the on and off relationship that herself and Victor Lumiere. Babette feels like it’s a never ending cycle with them and the dramatics of their relationship when they are together or the fallout of their split.
Sia ft The Weeknd - Elastic Heart
“well I've got thick skin and an elastic heart, but your blade it might be too sharp”
Babette is her own worst enemy. She has a habit of replying things in her head that didn’t work out and overanalysing everything. Her vanity results in a lot of harsh comments to herself and it can feel like that’s a whole separate version of herself.
Eminem ft Rihanna - Love The Way You Lie
“just gonna stand there and watch me burn, well that's alright, because I like the way it hurts, just gonna stand there and hear me cry, well that's alright, because I love the way you lie, I love the way you lie”
She’s aware that what Victor and her have isn’t entirely healthy. Their turbulent relationship whether it be as a couple, friends or as colleagues can be overdramatic and at times all consuming. Part of her will also care for Victor but with the constant whiplash of their on and off relationship, she acknowledges that they are just as bad as each other.
Hailee Steinfeld & Bloodpop - Capital Letters
“For worse or for better, gonna give it to you, in capital letters”
Babette isn’t someone that does anything half assed. She’s always someone that’s 100% committed to what ever she does whether it be work, friendships, relationships.
Beyoncé - ***Flawless
“you wake up, flawless, post up, flawless, ridin' round in it, flawless, flossin on that, flawless, this diamond, flawless”
Babette’s confidence knows no bounds. She knows she can be a lot to handle but she’s not going to change herself to suit others vision of her.
Could dress up, to get love
But guess what?
I'm never gonna be that girl
Who's living in a Barbie world
Could wake up, and make up, and play dumb
Pretending that I need a boy
Who's gonna treat me like a toy
I know the other girls wanna wear expensive things, like diamond rings
But I don't wanna be the puppet that you're playing on a string
This queen don't need a king
Oh, I don't know what you've been told
But this girl right here's gonna rule the world
Yeah, that's where I'm gonna be because I wanna be
No, I don't wanna sit still, look pretty
Enchanted - Taylor Swift
There I was again tonight
Forcing laughter, faking smiles
Same old tired, lonely place
Walls of insincerity, shifting eyes and vacancy
Vanished when I saw your face
All I can say is, it was enchanting to meet you
Your eyes whispered, "Have we met?"
'Cross the room your silhouette
Starts to make its way to me
The playful conversation starts
Counter all your quick remarks
Like passing notes in secrecy
So this is love - Sellah Sue
So this is love
So this is love
So this is what makes life divine
I'm all aglow, hmm
And now I know
The key to all heaven is mine
My heart has wings, hmm
And I can fly
I'll touch every star in the sky
So this is the miracle
That I've been dreaming of Hmm, hmm
So this is love
The sinner kissed an angel - Frank Sinatra
Stars in the sky were dancing
One night perfect for romancing,
The night a sinner kissed an angel,
He wanted thrills, she wanted love,
Oh but his sighs were tender
As he begged her to surrender,
The night a sinner kissed an angel,
And she believed that it was love.
Wait for your love - Ariana Grande
I didn't think you'd understand me
How could you ever even try?
I don't wanna tiptoe, but I don't wanna hide
But I don't wanna feed this monstrous fire
Just wanna let this story die
And I'll be alright
We can't be friends
But I'd like to just pretend
You cling to your papers and pens
Wait until you like me again
Wait for your love
Lo-love, I'll wait for your love
almost like being in love - Frank Sinatra
What a day this has been
What a rare mood I'm in
Why it's almost like being in love
There's a smile on my face
For the whole human race
Why it's almost like being in love
All the music of life seems to be
(Just) Like a bell that is ringing for me
And from the way that I feel
When the bell starts to peel
I would swear I was falling, I could swear I was falling
read more to find out tiana's daily routine and the music that makes her her! (tasks 1 and 2)
Task 1: Routine
Each day, Tiana wakes up at 6:30 and immediately showers. After eating breakfast, petting her rabbit, Doris, and doing her hair, it’s usually around 7:45. The rest of the morning—until 10:30, that is—is Tiana’s time to do hobbies or run errands. Then she drives to the Enchanted Rose Cafe to waitress. Her shifts can last through dinnertime, or, on certain days of the week, they end a little earlier so Tiana can drive to Third Street Restaurant and start cooking. Once her workplace has closed for the night, Tiana returns home and can either unwind for a bit or head straight to bed.
Days off happen every so often. When these occur, Tiana likes to spend time with family and friends. She looks forward to the day when she is working only one job and can structure her calendar more easily.

Where does true power come from? From a place of privilege and authority, or from a place of confidence and knowing that, from experience, one has the ability to get away with anything? Guinevere knew from quite an early age of her influence over others, how they would assume she was sweet and innocent just from her appearance. She has always wielded this power for her own gain, first for small favors as a form of experimentation, though later with the main purpose of escaping her family situation and find a new, greener place to set roots. After all, everyone wanted to help such an angelic being like young Guinevere. Most often than not, this help came in exchange for the promise of her love and attention, which she was happy to provide if that meant some sort of benefit for her. Here, power meant an apparently inexhaustible source of bargaining chips. She has always believed in the fairness of economics, after all. And if her steppingstones believed she was a godsend, a beautiful creature who would gift them with the promise of affection for a small price, then who was Guinevere to burst their bubble?
Deceive - trentemøller, Sune Rose Wagner
“I'll tell you why I love you
How I deceive you
How I trick you
I'll tell you why I love you”
As much as the power of her beauty makes her proud, it is undeniable that there's also a dark undercurrent to it, in how much she feels she's constantly just putting a front when interacting with others. How much of who Guinevere is, is just a face she puts on, and how much of it is real? Who is the real Guinevere? A hungry, desperate little girl from Missouri? Or a confident, accomplished woman of the world? Why does she even do the things she does, now that she is comfortably settled, and has been so for a while? These questions would annoy anyone, but they specifically drive her mad. Maybe, in the end, it's just for fun; there is a delight, after all, in deceiving others, and knowing she's smarter than everyone else. Maybe it's just about stroking her ego, and making sure she always has the upper hand. But maybe, anyways, keeping this mask on at all times, even with the few actual personal relationships she has, isn't such a good idea as it seemed at the time.
I'll Be Your Woman - Michelle Gurevich
“I'll be the mirror where you are queen
Your fellow magician of the waking dream
Hung with a hammer and a glass of wine
I'll be your woman and you can be mine”
Related to the previous song, there was a time (arguably, a time that hasn't ended) where Guinevere's main concern, regarding the act she put on, was to become whatever other people wanted of her. That could be a responsible, hardworking student, or a passionate, devoted lover, or a quiet, submissive partner, or a wild, fun-loving party girl. Even being someone who refused labels, who refused to be figured out or tied down, someone with depth, even that was a carefully balanced act. With time, Guinevere has found that acting like her own ideal self, regal, poised and self-reliant worked pretty well for her. People admired her, wanted to be her, and wanted her to like and appreciate them. Finding, over time, the person she wanted to be, and making her someone other people would also want her to be, was not particularly hard, especially as she settled over her younger years into someone who needed the social capital of dignity. What was hard, however, was keeping it up and making it seem natural, especially as her worst aspects (her resentment, her impatience, her inflexibility) it all came bubbling back up, more and more difficult to hide. Still, Guinevere has had plenty of practice, and plenty of reasons to keep it up.
Mad Woman - Sevdaliza
“I'm a lunatic
I'm what God forbids
A mad, mad woman”
Perhaps one of the few traits that remained consistent with Guinevere, her anger and easiness to provoke is something that she has grown to see as shameful. Pushing it down has been a lifelong work for her, making sure it was never even seen as a part of her. Instead, she tried to redirect it into a certain firmness and a cutthroat reputation that, indeed, has served her well as she ventured into business. Still, sometimes, when she's alone, when she knows nobody is looking at her, she allows this darker side to come out: smashing a dish and passing it for an accident, allowing herself one bloodcurdling scream in the woods, cursing out some random, unfortunate underling at her company, it all works as a momentary relief to the rage she feels every day, the furious dissatisfaction she still hasn't found a cure for. For what is the use for it, when one strives to perfection like she does? Wouldn't it be better to be more in control, to be proper, to not even have such a flaw? It certainly is nothing to be proud of, this weakness; and still Guinevere has some affection to this part of her personality, the one she can rely on being completely, unmistakably hers.
I Float Alone - Julee Cruise
“Now the night is falling
You are gone
Sad dreams blow through dark trees
Love's gone wrong”
Guinevere is not a family woman. She checks on her sisters out of sheer politeness, and, of course, to remind them of her success and make sure they're still deeply envious. However, there was one sister she was close to, the one she actually considered her friend. Sophie, barely a year older than herself, was Guinevere's confidante, the one she knew she could trust with anything and receive nothing but understanding and support. Her sudden disappearance and presumed death hit her hard, harder than anything else she had felt in her young age. The uncertainty of her death made it even worse: who knew where she might be, if she were still alive? Who knew what might have happened to her? And, most of all, more than her concerns about her wellbeing, Guinevere felt the hollow, insistent pain of being truly alone for the first time in her life. They had used to talk so often about their dreams for when they left their little town, all their plans, what their life would look like... And now those shared dreams would never become reality.
Together - The xx
“A premonition of the words
Come
To me”
Sophie wasn't the only real loving relationship Guinevere has experienced. When she met Percy Madley, an artist from a wealthy family, she really believed she had found true love. Adoring, funny, passionate, he was everything she had even wanted in a partner. More than perfect in her eyes, more than just another fling, she didn't doubt for a second when he asked her to marry him. It was a real connection. Just one look, just one smile, that was all they needed to communicate with each other, as if their souls were one and the same. She became devoted, not out of a sense of obligation and pride, like with David, but out of genuine feelings of being comforted and loved by him. Nevermind that, for all his virtues, Percy wasn't exactly easy to live with; nevermind that all the signs of a tempestuous marriage were right there in the beginning of the relationship; nevermind that Percy's perfect understanding of Guinevere also meant that he clearly saw all her faults. Devotion was not enough. It became evident that their love, no matter how perfect, how complete, was not enough.
The Moth & The Flame - Les Deux Love Orchestra
“The moth don't care if the flame is real
The flame and the moth got a sweetheart deal
And nothing fuels a good flirtation
Like need and anger and desperation”
At the end of the day, Guinevere doesn't know of a love in which she doesn't need to cling by her fingernails. All her relationships, whether fiery and passionate or cold and practical, were easy to acquire and difficult to maintain. The best relationships, the ones where she has felt the strongest emotions, the sort that satisfied her needs, were those where there had been a push and pull, a real effort to make it work. Between twisted mind games, promises of leaving at the next opportunity, partnerships of convenience and sudden and unwanted developing of real feelings, despite the compliments and the initial admiration her appearance garnered her, Guinevere has been told she was impossible to love more times that she can count. All she could do is hope to prove them wrong, to answer those claims with kisses and embraces, to eventually become cold again, angry again, and have to do it all again in some exhausting dance of disdain and desire.
No Ordinary Love - Sade
“I gave you all the love I got
I gave you more than I could give
Gave you love
I gave you all that I have inside
And you took my love
You took my love”
Devotion has never really gotten her anywhere, Guinevere has concluded. That doesn't mean she hasn't tried, at least before the bitterness fully settled in. After all, at first, her romance with Percy in particular had felt so pure, it was hard not to become crazy about him. Many of his friends had laughed and said the relationship wouldn't last long, but they hadn't cared. To Percy and Guinevere, still called Lucy back then, all they needed was their love. But no matter how much she loved him, how much she excused his faults, his dismissal of her feelings, his condescending words, his growing contempt towards her, she kept her stance. This was different than with David, she told herself. This was real. This was worth fighting for. And most importantly, she could change Percy to become who she wanted him to be. She saw the potential in him, and recalled their happier days together. Soon, however, those memories weren't enough. And Guinevere had to make a choice.
Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby - Cigarettes After Sex
“Nothing's gonna hurt you baby
As long as you're with me you'll be just fine
Nothing's gonna hurt you baby
Nothing's gonna take you from my side”
Despite all of Guinevere's posturing regarding love, the truth is that, even if subconsciously, there is still a glimmer of an old desire to have her own ideal love. Her previous marriages and romantic relationships have done nothing more than demonstrate why it was all a lie, but that doesn't refute the fact that, no matter how bitter she has become, Guinevere sometimes finds herself wondering what it would be like, finding someone with which she can feel as if she won't be judged, someone to care about and feel protective of. Her true love, one that won't become a sham like with David, won't rot like with Percy, won't become dull like with Phổ. It's a silly wish, she knows it, but one she still has despite knowing better. Assembled from her most cherished moments, those fantasies also remind her of all that she's lost, and what, most likely, she will never get back.
Love Saves The Day - Emily Wells
“I wanna go home, seeing is alright
I'm just a fire, burn everything in sight
I wanna go home, I wanna go out”
Guinevere swings between feeling empowered by her resilience and strength through her tragic marriages, and feeling like a child needing support and care. Most of all, she wants a place she can call home; whether that's with someone, or just a place where she feels safe, it is a feeling of nostalgia that she believes she will never go back to. Despite the hardships, it may be all about returning to her house in Missouri, with her competitive sisters and her inattentive mother; or it may be about the few moments in her relationships where she found some sort of comfort and shelter. It is a side of herself she hides quite flawlessly now, even more so than her loneliness and her rage. On her worst days, it feels like she is trapped in her new identity, inside Guinevere Bạch. What could becoming freely furious ever change about this inadequacy, what could a true lover do to reduce such a constant anguish? As with all the sides she hides, all those faults she has been trying to fix for decades, they might just be the most real features of herself: but this is the one that Guinevere denies the most, the one which brings her so much shame she can barely think about it. Better to pretend it doesn't exist, that such weakness is something she left behind years ago, something she can never concern herself with anymore.
