I've been using Happy Scribe to transcribe roughly ~3h of material in two languages and I must say it's really good?

I'm used to really shitty speech-to-text recognition and while Happy Scribe definitely needs post-editing and can't really distinguish speakers very well it's on an entirely different level compared to the automatic transcription or subtitling you'd find on YouTube or Panopto.

You can also add terms to your vocabulary which comes in handy with names and places.

It's pretty expensive but for those of you that need industry grade transcription I'd recommend it.

Happy Scribe does transcription and captioning (subtitling).

I specifically saved this info for the subtitling [*]:

Application includes a sample video. Expect the application to take 1 or 2 hours. You should find out within a few days if you failed the test, but you may not hear about being accepted and put on the wait list until 2 weeks after submitting your application. The wait list could last a few days or a few months.

You can reapply in 3 months, and there’s no prominently listed limit on number of retries.

Pay: Bi-weekly in your selected currency. (The site lists €1.10 per hour, which is currently about 1.22 USD.)

[*] Despite having separate pages in the sitemap for transcription and subtitling, Scribes are described as being able to do both types of work and will use the same application test including a sample video. This might not matter for someone interested in subtitling, but it will probably be a different skill check for someone used to transcription.
