I shrugged on my suit and a blue tie with silver stripes with a hollow feeling. Last night America was still barely conscious in the hospital wing. It was evidently the worst birthday I’ve ever had. I thought my worst birthday was the incident with Daphne, but it turned out I was wrong. Not being with someone you loved was a million times worse than losing a friend you never had feelings for. 

I sighed, looking at the dark circles under my eyes. The entire country was beginning to think I was weak and tired, and perhaps I was. Without America I was nothing but a carcass of a man. I couldn’t sleep at night without her tucked against my side or my chest against her back. I was tired. Tired of these misfortunes that drowned me.

There was a gala tonight for my birthday. Eadlyn planned it this year since America couldn’t. It made me happy and sad at the same time. I didn’t know it was possible.

I attended two meetings and did some paperwork before calling it a day. I was no use anyway with my head so foggy. 

A guard called me to the Great Room and I donned a smile the same way I put on my clothes. The guests bowed and I bowed back. I said a speech, thanking them all, but I didn’t quite catch what I was saying. It was like my mouth was being powered by something else, because I just wasn’t there.

The guests began to eat dinner and dance, and I received a hug from Eadlyn.

“Happy birthday, Dad!” she said, more cheerful than usual. I don’t know if it was because she was trying to perk me up or because it was my birthday. 

I smilled. “Thank you, Eady. You’ve really outdone yourself. This is the most extravagant party I’ve ever attended.”

“You deserve everything, Dad.” She cast a glance behind me and suppressed a grin. “I’ll go mingle with the Elite for a moment.”

Before I could turn around, a guard announced to the entire room, “Her Royal Majesty Queen America.”

I could barely suppress my gasp. There she was, in a shimmering dress that seemed dull in comparison to her entire being. She didn’t quite have her usual glow, but her being awake and here made me snap to attention. 

I didn’t care how many cameras caught me, or how many guests were staring, or how this would surely end up on every news platform. I ran. I ran faster than I ever have to America. My wife. My love. 

I encased her in my arms, welcoming her scent and her presence and the way her hair tickled my nose. “America,” I said, and I was surprised to find a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. “America, are you really here right now?”

She laughed softly. “I couldn’t miss my husband’s birthday.”

I laughed and she pulled back, wiping the tears on my cheeks. “When did you wake up?”

“This morning. Right after you left our bedroom I rested for a moment to gather my bearings and then I dressed up.”

“And the whole family knew before me?” I said, feigning offense.

America rolled her eyes, her lips quirking into a smirk. “You’re so selfish.”

“Only when it comes to you, Darling.” 

I kissed her right there in front of everyone. To hell with the country and to hell with what they’d say. Right now I had the world in my arms, and nothing could change that. 

Sorry this was so late. I had to write my paper for lit. Hope you liked it anyway!
