Buyer’s Remorse: We all do it, here is how to fix it
Lets set the scene: you are just browsing the racks at your local thrift store when you see that one item that causes a spark within you. You are in love! You didn't know how much you needed this item until you saw it! Your search is finally over. You head to the register satisfied with your special find. You bring it home and go about your day as usual. The next day you pull it out of the bag and that warm happy feeling that you felt only the day before is gone...what happened?! The thing you once loved now makes you wonder why you even picked it off the rack to begin with. This, my friends, is what is known as buyer’s remorse. Buyer’s remorse is usually associated with larger and more expensive items like fancy cars and big boats but as a seasoned thifter and resident poor college student I can confirm that it happens with thrift purchases as well. Me spending what little money I have on unnecessary items is like trying to get a peanut away from a starving squirrel so when I do have those moments of buyer’s remorse it can be a bit of a disappointment to myself as well as my wallet.
When and if this happens to you (and it will) there are a few things you can do to justify the problem:
1) You can return the item if it still has the tags on and you still have the receipt. This is the obvious answer but its not always the available. I know that some thrift stores don't except returns so sadly if you bought it, its yours. If this is the case there are always other options...
2) See if you can breath new life into it or repurpose it! Sometimes I buy items of clothing that I just honestly like fabric and i just don't like the cut but I convince myself to like it so I have a reason to buy it. Don't follow in my footsteps people, this leads to wasted money and too many articles of clothing I never wear. When this happens I will maybe refashion the item by adding maybe buttons or trim or if I just liked the fabric all cut it up and make something with it. I have taken some gnarly looking skirts and have made some really swanky throw pillows. Get creative!
3) Regift! So it turns out that you don't really like that flamingo lamp that you though would go so well in your living room but you do remember that your gal pal Becky really loves the color pink and that lamp would be a perfect match for her! Well gifting that tacky flamingo lamp to Becky makes you a good friend because you pay attention and you got rid of the lamp! Its a win-win situation!
And last but certainly not least 4) Except defeat and donate it. I know this is the hardest option but sometimes its necessary. Considerate it a lesson learned. Donating it may be difficult to do seeing as you just payed for it but there is probably someone who is looking for that exact thing that you just bought. Reduce, reuse, recycle people! Some will buy it.
I will leave you with some wise words from my mother (because they are always right) “When in doubt, do without”.
Framed pictures are great items to pick up at thrift stores for decorating a dorm room. They are easily hung up with command hooks and they look nice and polished compared to unframed posters. All of these wall hangings came to a total of about $10. The more you thrift, the more you save!
