Thoughts on “Hard Vacuum” (Expanse 5.8)

SPOILERS, clearly. As a note, I have read the books, so they’re will be references and spoilers for them, as well.

“Vacuum” doesn’t look like a word to me. Never has, and I suspect it never will.

I want to take a moment and say that the theme of the Expanse is perfect for the show. It harkens to the music on old “inspirational” scifi shows, but is also meloncoly. The latter befits a vision of humanity that is still struggling with inequality and wealth disparity, even as it leaves the bounds of the Earth.

Peaches and Amos still please, though I worry they’re going to ramp up the romance, and they’re not really romantic in the books. They were family, in a way that had nothing to do with sex and everything to do with love. I’d forgotten how/why Amos’s story came back to Erik. I wasn’t interested in that part of the story; I was far more invested in Naomi’s story, in the book. 

Ugh, watching Marco use Naomi’s “death” against Filip makes me so mad. I have personal issues watching narcissists manipulate people, but especially watching them manipulate their children.

Reading about what Naomi went through to get away from Marco was rough enough; seeing it play out is a bigger gut punch. I do enjoy watching her science/engineer her way through this emergency. I mean, she pulled several pieces together so get what she needed, and damn near suffocated herself a dozen times to alter the message.

So I’ve read fan-chatter that Bull will be the new Roci pilot, and I guess, sure, but I don’t see the path where we go from “I’m not risking myself to save Holden’s girlfriend” to “part of the crew.” They might not try to fold him into the “family” aspect of it. I hope they don’t pigeon-hole Clarissa in there, either. She wasn’t the pilot, her sister was, and it would stretch belief to have her filling that role.

Drummer! Nothing else, just got excited to see her again.

Oh, it’s heartbreaking watching her crew fight, but the scene where they laugh for a moment provides the hope they’ll make it. Pa’s crew wasn’t given this much depth; you never get a sense for them like I have for Drummer’s crew. I mean, you got to know them as Pa did, but you didn’t get these family scenes.

I do not buy for a second that Matar Kubeliya attacked Marco. I’ll need the show to prove to me that Marco isn’t a petulant little toddler about everything. Until then, he killed them because they “wronged” him and then put in the coverup. Hell, even if the show does prove it, I may still head-canon it.

I mean, I think I hate Marco. The asteroid storyline in the books is just horrifying, and I had a very emotional response to it. I expected the same and from the show, and I haven’t, as much. I think that’s because I knew it was coming. 

Also, I’m calling it: “we must feed and protect the Belt” is 100% the show indicating they’re following through on the storyline that was Marco’s ultimate downfall.

Secretary-General Paster is off to a good start -- with a solid speech. His war council went exactly how I expected -- he knows he has to make a big move, but he can’t figure it out and his advisors don’t agree. He is lost, and unable to weigh the benefits and consequences well enough to make the hardest call of his life. 

Ooo, when Karal told Drummer about Naomi, I thought she was dead then and there. I’m very sad I’m wrong. Watching Drummer mourn Naomi hurt.

I feel like “Tell James Holden I’m in control” should become a thing. Mostly because Holden seems like he needs to be reminded of that sometimes.

You can see the lightbulb above Naomi’s head when she realizes what she has to do.

Dominique Tipper manages to convey the entire perspective from the novels directly through the screen.  As clear as if we’re getting her thought process through direct narration.

You can fucking see it.

The Expanse 5x08 - Hard Vacuum

OH MY GOD. One of my favourite episodes of the season. I was yelling throughout the whole thing so much happened where to start holy shit.

Okay lets begin by saying Naomi Nagata is incredible and the embodiment of perseverance. Not only did her plan to get away from the Pella succeed, but being in indescribable pain, in a ship that has no tools, controls, has been stripped clean and is a ticking motion sensor bomb, she used her intellect as an engineer to alter the fake message to where Alex, Bobbie, Jim, whoever hears it next will know that it is a trap but that she needs help. That is my girl. Operation Rescue Naomi Nagata and 3/4 Rocinante Family Reunion next episode please!

Moving onto Earth, it is still in shambles after the almost apocalypse. Amos and Clarissa are still travelling together they made it to Baltimore and convinced Erich to help them get to a ship and get off the damn planet. His mentality reminded me of Alita: Battle Angel where that rich guy would rather be king of the underground Iron City than be basically at the bottom of the food chain in Zolem. Erich probably doesn’t want to go into space to start anew after becoming so powerful in Baltimore but man there is nothing left there.

My love Drummer. My poor Camina. The strain between the polyam belter fam is real. Questioning their morality after being forced to join Marco is driving a wedge between them and especially seeing that other faction being destroyed by the Free Navy is so unsettling. Even more than that Karal telling Drummer that Naomi is dead and that they were on the Pella at the same time broke her. If she wasn’t feeling guilty enough about Ashford that definitely did it. Whilst I was yelling myself for her to save Naomi a few episodes ago, there was no way she could’ve known. I hope it doesn’t eat her up too much and I especially hope Oksana tells Drummer that Naomi may still be alive.

This is already long but to finish off, new Secretary General on Luna giving a speech and Chrisjen and that admiral are obviously disagreeing on how to retaliate. Can I say, I hope they don’t destroy Pallas. I get it, Marco killed millions of innocent Earthers but an eye for an eye does not work here because where does the killing end? Find somewhere that is directly linked to Marco not some random station that may have Marco sympathisers otherwise its Eros all over again. Speaking of Marco, he continues to be an asshole and fantastic villain. How dare he blame Cyn’s death on Filip! What?? Filip is also wrong. Naomi didn’t kill Cyn and neither did Filip what is Marco talking about. Ugh.

Either way I am BEYOND excited for next weeks episode I love that The Expanse airs on Wednesdays because the end of the week is for watching The Expanse reactions, Monday breezes by and before I know it I’m saying “the expanse tomorrow”! I love it.

I forgot how hard in particular “Hard Vacuum” and “Winnipesaukee” hits in terms of showcasing the women of the Expanse and their character growth:

Clarissa, who we’ve only mostly seen killing people and originally was  dedicated to getting her old life and status back, manages to convince Erich to leave the life he had known. She also commits to not abandoning any innocent people, going as far as to directly contradict Erich (granted she still uses her enhancements to kill the crazy power-hungry island rent-a-cops, but they would’ve killed her first). And she manages to be the only one who can pilot them out of this mess.

Drummer, the mostly stoic and stubborn fighter, shows perhaps the widest array of emotions she’s displayed in an episode - she admits insecurity in her ability to continue working under the free Navy, she has a silly moment with her new polycule, she lets out the most visceral scream in mourning for Naomi.

Chrisjen, who we first meet torturing a Belter smuggler largely out of resentment towards the O.P.A for killing her son, surrenders her seat on the provisional U.N. because of how morally reprehensible she finds this military action. Chrisjen, whose biggest critique in season 4 was that she was calculated, unfeeling, inauthentic, and couldn’t showcase her emotions, lets out her grief in losing Arjun and begs her fellow politicians to consider their humanity.

And of course, these episodes would be nothing without Naomi’s brilliance: after risking the hard vacuum of space, she single-handedly manages to circumvent her abusive ex’s plan to destroy her new family, all while being acted out by every bone in Dominque Tipper’s body.
