the amount of ppl that don't get that mary's ugly ass dresses (affectionate) in london are 100% purposefully so, is so damn annoying. 'it's giving regency temu' & 'mrs gardiner would never let her wear that', like, i'm sorry, but were those ppl watching with their eyes closed & their ears plugged??
mrs gardiner is the one to tell mary to choose what she likes REGARDLESS of society's perceptions or expectations, why the fuck would she then stop mary from wearing those dresses made with the fabrics that MARY chose? this is so clearly about mary finding out what SHE enjoys & makes her happy, it's always about her self discovery. it's not a costuming problem at all, bc everyone else looks perfectly fine & mary herself later has better suited clothing, still with her clear preference for bright colours. so ask yourselves, just why would those 2 specific dresses look rougher & more handmade? why would they be the outliers? why would characters WITHIN THE STORY specifically call out those 2 looks?
