In the show Game of Thrones, at Hardhome. When the dead show up and Jon, Tormund and the rest of Jon's men are trying to control the chaos and keep things orderly getting on the boats...and the realization comes, that if the army of the dead get past that stockade, everyone will die..

Jon Snow takes a look around, and as Lord Commander, draws his sword and shouts "Nights Watch, with me!" and rushes past all of the Free Folk and charges into the fray..to save as many as he possibly can...

Magic Awakens: Jon Snow XVII - The Hidden Prince

Summary: Jon Snow arrives at Hardhome to convince the Free Folk taking refuge there to evacuate onto ships to settle south of the Wall. Unfortunately a storm begins to brew.

Preview: The fleet of ships, courtesy of Stannis Baratheon, was anchored off the shore. Currently, Jon, Tormund, and Grenn were rowing themselves in a small rowboat. Many more stretched on each side and behind them, carrying his brothers to try to convince the Free Folk to board and escape from the ice monsters that stalked and murdered them, enslaving them and their children to grow their army.

The Free Folk sat in stoic silence as Jon and Tormund walked through the camps, the Night’s Watch flanking him. The mistrust was plain to see, and filled the air with crackling tension. It reminded Jon of the way the Others spoke.

Edd Tollett cracked a joke beside him. “You would think they saw an ice dragon, the way they are staring at us.”

Tormond had to one-up him. “Nah, just Jon’s little pecker.”

Did George R. R. Martin originally plan for Jon Snow to die at Hardhome?

According to early drafts during the “Five-Year Gap”, Jon’s arc in *A Feast for Crows* would’ve ended beyond the Wall... not at Castle Black.

Martin once considered a death not by betrayal — but by the Wildlings, the Watch, or maybe even the Others.

What would’ve happened to Westeros if Jon died there? Would he have returned... changed?
