The Acolyte is Bad
I’m so disappointed and disgusted. I finally watched the Acolyte and its main plot point is literally the most harmful evil twin stereotype that there is. A stereotype that I’ve lived through direct harm from.
The stereotype that twins are one soul split between two people.
I grew up as a twin and this stereotype led to direct discrimination of myself and my sibling. I was treated as if I was half of a person and no matter how hard either of us worked our achievements were treated as joint. I had scholarships reduced to half. I had literal awards split down the middle. I was misdiagnosed medically because I wasn’t seen as my own person and was subjected to treatments that were wrong for my body. I experienced sexual harassment about how incest didn’t count since we weren’t really two people. I’ve been told I was an abomination, Satanic and non-human. That I was evil.
This constant abuse from society that me and my sibling weren’t whole led to my siblings mental breakdown which caused real physical abuse at the hands of someone I loved. It almost got me murdered. Abuse that I couldn’t get help for or healing from because people dismissed it as “real abuse” because once again I am not a real person to them. It’s not abuse if you’re hurting the other half of yourself.
I’ve had to hide my identity as a multiple in order to be safe and treated like a person.
We are not mystical fantasy beings that you can play with like we are action figures or use for flavoring in your stories. We are real people with feelings, thoughts and individuality.
The Acolyte is harmful and abusive bigotry against twins and it’s not okay. Fuck you Star Wars and Fuck you Disney. I was looking forward to having some space fun and instead you fucking triggered my PTSD. Get bent.
