Recommendation: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1982) dir: Terry Hughes, Harold Prince cast: Angela Lansbury, George Hearn, Edmund Lyndeck I think many people are familiar with Tim Burton's adaptation of this musical, but to be perfectly honest when I saw that movie I wasn't most impressed. It's good, but I never knew why so many people would say "Sweeney Todd is the best Stephen Sondheim creation"; until I saw this tv movie/stage recording from 1982. It just shows how great this musical is, and why it has left such a mark on everyone who has seen it. It's a tv movie, and basically a stage recording, so it's unfair to expect silver screen quality; but even with that this tv movie is worth every praise it gets and even more. First off, the comical tone of the Sondheim musical (which is very absent in Tim Burton's adaptation) gives this movie more depth and makes it ten time more uncomfortable when you laugh along with "A Little Priest". But the reason in my opinion that makes this tv movie unmatchable is the chance of seeing Angela Lansbury and George Hearn together. What a goddamn duo! Lansbury is the perfect Mrs. Lovett and Hearn is geniuenly horrifying as Sweeney. He is the literal "demon" barber of Fleet Street. The voice, the eyes, the mannerism, it gives me goosebumps. On the other hand Angela Lansbury's deceitful acts mixed with a simple-minded attitude and a cheery tone makes her a bit more terrifying too. Who you can trust, when her Mrs. Lovett cooks people? This is something I can't recommend enough to musical fans, Sondheim fans, or fans of Burton's adaptation (for comparison). Give it a watch and get lost in the majestic voice of Lansbury and Hearn, and feel the joyful horror of Sondheim's masterpiece.
