Musical Monday

Good evening, musical lovers! This week's highlighted musical received a nomination for Best Musical in 1971, but fell short in taking home the coveted title. However, this Bock/Harnick score enjoyed 507 performance on Broadway; not a bad way to live out a musical life. Here are the quick facts on this Musical Monday!

Broadway Run: October 19, 1970 - January 1, 1972

Awards Won: Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical (Hal Linden), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Keene Curtis)

Other: The Rothschilds played the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre for its entire run.

Fun Fact: Hal Linden's sole Tony Award nomination and win came from his work in The Rothschilds, playing the leading role of Mayor Rothschild.

And there you have it. A 1971 nugget musical that has never been revived, and can only be found around the YouTubes and possible collectors' archives. Next week we step right on over to 1972, where two Shakespearean gents took home the Best Musical trophy, leaving three in its wake. Have a great week of musicals!

Jerry Bock died today. He was the gifted composer, with Sheldon Harnick, of the score of “Fiddler on the Roof.” He was 81, and had had a stroke a few days ago. Here’s a link to the story from Playbill
