Confessions of a Fanfic Author
And the Path to Writing a Debut Novel
In the autumn of 2021, I began to embark on a journey of fanfic authorship. The whole ordeal was born out of curiosity and not to fetishize real living humans, but it quickly evolved into something chaotic and strange and secretive. I chose a massive fandom that I enjoyed being on the periphery of and quickly realized how easy it was to dive in and contribute to the madness while ensuring I would at least have a decent amount of eyes on my work. Being in my mid-to-late-thirties, I have felt such a pang of embarrassment over the hobby despite knowing so many other brilliant fanfic authors my own age, some of whom have either published their first novel or are on the path to doing so. People hear “fanfic” and assume it’s all teenagers writing emo nonsense about furry Draco Malfoy and trust me, it absolutely is, but it is also so much more. (Sorry for the HP jumpscare friends, but let’s face it: the franchise and fandom continue to be an invasive species on the entirety of the online zeitgeist.)
