Happy National Harvey Wallbanger Day! There's a widely circulated story that this 1970s drink—made with vodka, orange juice, and Galliano— was made created by bartender Donato "Duke" Antone at his Los Angeles bar, the Blackwatch, for a surfer named Tom Harvey. Harvey supposedly got so drunk he started running into the walls, hence the drink's name. #NationalHarvey WallbangerDay #HarveyWallbanger #FoodSales #WeKnowFood #FoodConsultant #FoodDude #FoodService #Food #FoodServiceSolutions #FoodOfTheDay #DrinkOfTheDay #NobertSales @NobertSales (at Germantown, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkuirGhgB-5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Harvey supposedly got so drunk he started running into the walls, hence the drink's name. A more likely story… According to Antone's grandson (whom Simonson connected with after a story he wrote about the Harvey Wallbanger ran in Saveur), the bartender developed a drink called a Duke's Screwdriver (Galliano, vodka, and orange juice) at the Blackwatch (the bar had no menu). Thus, the Harvey Wallbanger may be the result of corporate collaboration between Antone and George Bednar (who in 1966 became marketing director of McKesson Imports Co., which handled Galliano), taking a drink Antone did in fact create and "giving it a new and more marketable name." #NationalHarveyWallbangerDay #HarveyWallbanger 🍹 #FoodSales #WeKnowFood #NonFoodSolutions #FoodConsultant #DisposableSolutions #FoodDude #FoodService #Food #FoodServiceSolutions #NobertSales @NobertSales (at Germantown, Tennessee) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHW3ex4l2FV/?igshid=15gtm2wulm4vw
The Harvey Wallbanger
It’s great to get away. And better yet – get away without the kids. I love em’. They make you laugh and cry and scream all in the same game. One cheats because the other changed the rules. One cries because the other one wins. And at some stage the ‘I’m not playing anymore’ comes out. There is constant bargaining, consoling and downright good parenting that helps you through this one card game that should have taken 10 minutes but has already surpassed the half-hour mark. So when you get the chance to ‘get away’ you get going. I just came back from a lovely weekend away with the wife and the left the children at my inlaws. Enough said.
My wife and I went for a hike. It rained, well actually poured…. We checked into a hotel. We played tennis. We went to the pool. We got changed ourselves without helping others (children obviously). We relaxed. We enjoyed time without the kids. Sometimes we do take-out at home. We don’t include the kids. We make them frozen pizza. I feel guilty sometimes but they are happy. So when we actually got to sit in a restaurant without ‘entertaining them’, it was like heaven. There was no high chair. I don’t even think this place had a children menu (well at least not attached to its dinner menu). And on top of that we got to have a cocktail beforehand.
While the wife pondered over what wine to choose, I gave the once (or four times) over of the cocktail menu. There was a dedicated page to Gin & Tonics. There were the usual ones I make on an average Sunday, and a house special. I was just about to go with the house special which contained Prosecco but at last glance, there was a Harvey Wallbanger, one of the cocktails on my to do (or drink) list. It is also the same cocktail, my famous Aunt said she ordered because she like the name of it.
The Harvey Wallbanger in simplier terms is a Screwdriver with a small bit of Galliano Liqueur. It was created in the United States during the 1950s. The name Harvey comes from the movie of the same name and in the movie the rabbit character slams up against the wall. How they merge the two is beyond me. This fact is coming from my cocktail bible but I cannot verify it with other sources (oh well..., don’t tell my college professor) So after what appeared to be two minutes, my drink arrived and truth be told, it tasted like a screwdriver with a bit of an orange slick kick. It was creamy as well, which was nice and reminded me of the Orange Julius brand back in the early 90s. I let me wife have a sip, she enjoyed it and I sat back and enjoyed it as well. It wasn’t terribly alcoholic. It could be drank on a nice day. The combination of orange juice and vodka was perfect. Not too citrus, but not overly alcoholic. I get worried about too much vodka... it reminds me of the 60/40 (vodka/oj) I used to do when I was much, much younger. We talked quickly about the kids, about her job and my upcoming soccer season. After the drink, I decided not to get another as dinner was approaching and don’t like to mix the two (having a cocktail with your main course is a no-no). We looked over the menus and moved over to our table. I ordered the fish and chips and my wife ordered the burger. We finished one more glass of wine over dinner and talked about how great our day was and how its great to get out without the kids. I saw other kids at other tables annoying their parents. Playing with a phone over dinner. Aimlessly walking around the restaurant, while the wait staff dodge with smiles. Kids standing on a chair?!?!. I can’t say during the meal, I missed my kids... We said we would do all the same again... another hike, another hotel.. maybe another Harvey Wallbanger. Or maybe bring the kids. We could bring a deck of cards... Maybe not.
