nine in the afternoon - panic at the disco
Into a place where thoughts can bloom Into a room where it's nine in the afternoon And we know that it could be And we know that it should And you know that you feel it to
It’s well into the afternoon before Vix wakes up. She moves to stretch onto her side, but finds her movements hindered by the heavy weight upon her. She blinks against the sunlight and shifts her legs from Zabuza’s. Suddenly she feels wide awake, feels every inch of skin sizzling where it is touching his.
Zabuza is still sound asleep, his head on her chest, limbs intertwined loosely in her own. Vix swallows. He looks so serene in that instance, so enchanting. Hesitantly, she hovers her hand over his head before seizing the opportunity to massage her fingers through his hair. He shifts and a soft, contented sigh leaves his lips. Vix snatches her hand away, taken aback. She lays her head back against the pillows and tunes into the steady rise and fall of their chests, in sync.
She needs to get up. She needs to get out of this bed. Away from him.
The kunoichi chews her lip a few moments longer, freely admiring his features before succumbing once more to his presence. Vix wraps her arms around him, one hand moving softly back and forth along Zabuza’s spine. She’s unaware of the soft smile on her lips when she nuzzles her nose into his hair, inhaling his scent, losing herself a bit to this unprecedented, stolen moment.
A small startled sound squeaks out of her as Zabuza rolls over suddenly, pulling her tighter against him and nestling his face into the crook of her neck. Vix tenses, blinks at the ceiling, an unbearable heat flaring in her cheeks. Zabuza’s light snoring, however, persists. This new position is all the worse for her overactive imagination: there’s too much of him pressed deliciously against too much of her. Vix shakes her head and futilely tries to break free one, two, three times. The heiress sighs lamentably. Trapped uselessly within all his muscle, she’s painfully aware of how much he goes easy on her in their spars. She racks her brain for a solution, ignoring the comfort of his warmth, of this endearing softness she rarely saw in him.
This is Zabuza. Aggravating fucking Zabuza. No--no fucking Zabuza. Just aggravating Zabuza. Better.
He really is sleeping so peacefully that she feels guilty waking him, but if she spent any more time in his vicinity she was going to lose it. Vix inhales deeply and then cries out in feigned pain. This elicits the desired reaction as Zabuza jolts awake, getting his bearings of his surroundings, blinking down at her, touching her face, concerned. “What happened?” he mutters groggily. Vix’s expression softens. Oh no. “Sorry. Must’ve stretched the wrong way. I’m okay.” He furrows his brow, scanning over her to be sure himself. He must be satisfied she’s telling the truth because his body relaxes momentarily once more. “Okay. Well then, good morning.” Their eyes meet and something pulls inside of him at her bright laughter. Shit. “Good morning.”
He had slept deep and dreamless--must’ve unwittingly tangled himself up in her in the night, because tangled they most certainly were. Once again, he hasn’t realized their proximity until it was at a fever pitch. Her fingers move softly at the base of his neck. She searches his eyes; he has yet to pull away from their lazy embrace. Once again, he is entranced by the softness of her body in his hands, overwhelmed with a relentless urge to kiss her. No, no. They come back to themselves at the same time, both laughing nervously, breaking apart.
Vix presses a hand to her forehead and looks at the opposing wall. Zabuza cracks his neck to one side, then the other, willing the blush out from his cheeks.
This is Zabuza.
This is Vix.
What are you doing....?
“So...did you sleep good?” she prompts. He side eyes her. “Yep. You?” She bites her lip and nods. “Yep.” “Good.” “Excellent.”
They sit for another uncomfortable, weighted silence before, mercifully, Vix’s phone pings. Oh thank God. She’s so eager for the distraction from this terrible awkwardness she doesn’t register that they had switched sides in the night. She doesn’t register that she has climbed into Zabuza’s lap in her efforts to snatch her phone up from the nightstand. Whatever resolve he had been working at steeling back up shatters. His hands hover at her hips, hesitant, wanting. Her free hand slowly floats down to rest at his waist. “I..” she stumbles. They blink at each other wide-eyed. “Sorry, I...” Zabuza’s expression tightens, confused. He’s not sure he’s ever seen her.....flustered. Her blush deepens. Despite his trepidation, an amused smirk tugs at the corner of his mouth. Inwardly, Vix groans. Her limbs are not working the way she wants them to and she goes tumbling off the bed in her mad dash away from him.
Her heart is pounding in her chest. It would be so easy to indulge her impulses; stoic as he may be, few resisted her charms. But she knew it could never be that simple. She’d never forgive herself for doing something so selfish. Not with him. Besides, she felt something more than just desire, she felt something much lighter, deeper....No.
“Are you ok-” “Kakashi wants to bring Hikari today.” Zabuza looks surprised. After their disastrous last encounter, he hadn’t realized they’d been keeping in touch. Vix rubs the back of her neck. “I thought it might be worth another try.” Another text. She glances down, smiles privately a moment, then looks back up at him. “You don’t have to stick around if you don’t want to.” He raises his brows, then tightens his jaw, understanding. Of course, she wanted to be alone. And why shouldn’t she? It was her husband and son, after all. You’re the odd one out here, he reminds himself.
Vix watches Zabuza’s expression change before settling back behind its usual, placid state. It seems she’d struck a nerve. Already she misses his laughter, but she’s had far too many confusing feelings this morning to want to dwell on it further. She doesn’t know what else to do or say so she simply exits, chiding herself for forgetting the circumstances. He was only here because she had nearly died. All of this was temporary...I mean even Haku couldn’t... Vix shakes her head and focuses back. When the time came, she needed to be ready to let him go.
Zabuza lets out the breath he didn’t know he’d been holding and presses his palms into his eyes. He’s not sure what he allowed himself to believe over the last few minutes. That he could want her? That she wanted him? Tch. He quickly quashes the misplaced jealousy that had surfaced. A day to himself was exactly what he needed: a time to purge the unwelcome sentiments that clouded his mind when Vix was around.
