@hatchetober day 7 - monsters
Right on Time
Hatchetober 2020 Prompt(s): This could technically be applied to a lot of prompts, but mainly Bad Ending, Apocalypse, PEIP and Death
CW: main character death, gore
A/N: In which I reimagine PEIP as a TUA Commission-type organization that oversees the space-time continuum. A little far-fetched, but I think it’s a fun idea to throw around :)
~
PEIP was always on a tight schedule.
This would make sense to any outsider; they do look like a very serious organization, with very serious people working in it, with very serious and complicated technology running day and night.
That was the case. But, when you would see what exactly was on the schedule, you would start asking questions.
You would be greeted with passages like these:
10:30:00 AM: Have Mayfield walk the dog. 10:47:05 AM: Have Mayfield meet with Anna Tesorero at the corner of the Beanies next to CCRP Technical, and engage in the required conversation.
And these:
1:28:09 PM: Hostile entities will engage. 4:43:56 PM: All faculty and staff will have been fully wiped out.
And if you go far enough, you will see that strangely, the same exact date will be listed, but, with different events:
1:25:33 PM: The last of the hostile entities are wiped out. 2:00:67 PM: The Houstons go home.
Well, when the organization’s job was to monitor space and time itself, it would make a bit of sense, wouldn’t it?
General John McNamara was aware of the schedules. How there were so many for the same days, how easily it could change on a dime the minute a variable moves differently. How whether or not Hatchetfield would survive depended on these very variables.
If Emma Perkins is late to work.
If Tom Houston wakes up early.
If Lex Foster forgets her cigarette pack at home.
If Jane Perkins survives the car crash.
The last one was less of a variable though, and more of an inevitable catalyst for the events that caused these people to become variables.
John had always thought it was a little unfair how reduced these people were in the eyes of PEIP. He was loyal to his organization, but these individuals were unaware that their every move was monitored, manipulated, thought of as incidents triggering the little gears in the machinations of the universe.
Like every PEIP soldier, John knew exactly when he would die. 10:37:44 PM. As John surveyed the eerily empty streets of Hatchetfield, the sound of singing far off, it seemed clear what would be the cause. Musical zombies that would attack him in the alleyway behind PEIP Headquarters. That was what John was destined to fall by.
Needless to say, John wasn’t very fond of that ending.
So, even in the smallest of ways, he would try and resist.
To him, it didn’t matter if any person did something that ensured his death; he would survive no matter what.
It wasn’t worth succumbing to your fate like that when you had a husband and more self-esteem than any of the variables had combined, after all.
John McNamara was stubborn. He was also foolish, but having served PEIP for more than twenty years, that wouldn’t exactly be obvious to him until he was cornered in the alleyway.
Even without his watch, John heard the ticking of the hand counting down his last moments, as the possessed husks of his colleagues stared him down with hungry, cold, glowing eyes, the bright blue goop running from their mouths and wounds dripping onto the wet pavement, splattering onto his boots.
John sat against the wall, barely containing a scream of pain from the slash in his abdomen and the broken bone in his arm. His other arm was glued to his stomach in a desperate attempt to keep his intestines in. His vision became more and more blurred, and soon the only thing he could detect was the blue light emanating from the monsters, and their joyous singing flooding his mind, deafening.
Helpless and weak, General John McNamara closed his eyes.
October 30, 2018, Timeline #35
10:37:44 PM: General John McNamara is fatally wounded and succumbs to the hostile entities in the alleyway behind PEIP Headquarters.
Hatchetober day 4: Time
Today's semi-cursed concept: the Wiggly watch. Maybe Wiley wears this in an alternate version of Black Friday.
Hatchetober Day 1- Bad Ending
11pm October 1st! I’ll probs give up on this halfway through but I’m going to try and get something out at least for the first few days.
TW Blood and Death
Everything hurt. That’s all Tom could focus on for a while. The thousands of tiny shards of glass clawing their way into every exposed piece of skin, the gash on his forehead that allowed blood to roll down his face, staining his cheek like crimson tears.
Drip
Drip
Drip
Onto the seat below him. A noise so quiet it could scarcely be heard and yet it was somehow keeping him grounded.
It had all happened so quickly, he couldn’t even explain it. It was raining, it was dark, he wasn’t really concentrating, Jane was yelling at him. Jane.
Frantically pulling at his seat belt Tom tried to turn towards her. He couldn’t see, it was too dark, he couldn’t hear her, was she breathing? Oh my God why couldn’t he hear her breathing? He was panicking now and he knew it but he couldn’t stop himself. She was his whole world, he couldn’t lose her, he wasn’t ready to lose her.
Looking back on it he wasn’t quite sure how he managed, but he was able to pull himself out of the car. Soaked and exhausted he stumbled blindly across to the passenger door and threw it open, gently pulling Jane out onto the road with him. Even then he knew it was too late.
Her body was limp and soaked with blood, some wound he had neither the time nor competence to attempt to close up. He searched in vain for a pulse, knowing the whole time that he wouldn’t find one, that she was gone, but he had to try. He had to try and save her.
If it had been a movie she would have had some dramatic final words, she would have told him that she loved him, that it wasn’t his fault. She would have let out one final rasping breath before her eyes fluttered closed forever. But this was real. Her last words had been something mundane, something he had never even been really listening to, her last breath lost to the cold evening air. It was quick it was cruel it was callous but it was life.
He held her body as close to him as he could, savouring the last chance he would ever get to do so. Soon an ambulance would come along and tear her way from him forever. He just sat there: blood soaked, rain drenched and miserable, sobbing into her shoulder as the blue flashing lights rolled slowly closer.
