I just finished “Sharp Objects” by Gillian Flynn because I thought I try to reading my first thriller novel and the description sounded interesting. It’s the story of a reporter that returns to her small town to cover the murder of two children where their teeth have been strangely removed.

I don’t what I expected, but the entire “shock and aw” writing style that’s only purpose is to titillate and provoke was a hit over the head and the least fun I have had reading a book in awhile. The sexualization of children was disgusting and though she was probably trying to make a point about it like books like “Lolita,” (I guess??) the gender commentary was so clumsy, shallow, and meaningless that it’s rendered null and void. It seemed like the author misconstrued being dark with being deep.

ALL the characters seemed exactly the same without any interesting defining characteristics. They seem all largely vile people, but with no deeper motivations on why besides a very cursory commentary in womanhood.

The pacing was languid, the mystery was not much of a mystery, and the ending was especially rushed and told to the reader instead of shown. Ugh.
