Heated rivalry exists in this weird space where it wants to acknowledge irl homophobia (well. outside of ilya being russian because Russia Bad 😑) but ultimately fails to do it when it's more than a detail.
Like the scene where the team USA guy whose name i forget tries to support the figure skater friend is really good and relatable. He's trying to be supportive but ultimately perpetuates a homophobic stereotype, making shane and scott uncomfortable, but they are unable to respond. I like it.
But then u get shit like the locker room sexting and shane coming out to rose in a very public restaurant (this scene which should be devastatingly emotional undercut by the idiotic peg hole line...), the only character to use a slur being a russian, and the fuckass cup kiss (ripped right from check please. which. lol) and it's like. well. this show is bad
