THE HAUNTED ELEVATOR IN THE MERLE HAY MALL - Urbandale/Des Moines, Iowa. The Merle Hay Mall was built in 1959 on the site of the former St. Gabriel Monastery (1921–1958). Built on a site with hidden graves. The Mall was also where a tragic fire occurred in 1978 which claimed 11 lives. Considered by paranormal researchers as one of the “Most Haunted” places in Iowa, a focal haunting spot at this location is purportedly the elevator just inside the main entrance. This elevator is said to exhibit strange electrical power phenomena and operate, seemingly, on its own accord - or by some unseen force. Voices and noises from inside of the empty elevator have also been alleged.
