Hey how's it going, a lot of stuff came out last year and the independent/not Marvel or DC scene was incredible.
That said it always ends up under the rug because it doesn't have Batman in it, so I thought I'd give you a quick list of things you can pick up in trade paperback that are worth reading. Check below the cut!
Ghost Pepper
for: Teen to adult
This is maybe the best new comic in years, an action adventure story by Ludo Lullabi, formerly of blizzard entertainment and currently airship syndicate. He is Joe Madureira's understudy and it shows, the best damn comic right now.
FML
for: Teen to adult
FML is great. If you have someone Going Through The Changes in any sense of it this is a great one for them, or if you're a parent nothing has shown the anxiety of children better than this. Also there's a murder mystery but y'know, details.
UltraMega
for: Teen to adult.
Ultramega is insane. You want kaiju battles this is the book you read, amazing action on every page.
The Moon is Following Us
For: Adult. Not kids. Not teens. This comes with a content warning it touches on some serious topics do not give this to a kid.
Two parents dive into their comatose daughter's dreams in an attempt to wake her up, with the fantastical world inside the dreams being drawn by Riley Rossmo and the real world being drawn by Daniel Warren Johnson to give this amazing difference in the world. Rossmo and Johnson are some of the best artists out there, and this really makes both their work sing.
Havana Split
for: teen to adult
CIA agents in Cuba pre revolution trying to resolve problems they may or may not be responsible for. Gorgeous stuff with great paneling.
Moonshine Bigfoot
for - teen to adult
Looks like them duke boys are in trouble again. Moonshine bigfoot is a love letter to dukes of hazard, 70s-80s television and everything in between. Amazing inking and over the top pages, extremely fun and just very, very, hazard county.
Hack/Slash = Bodybags
for - adult, maybe teen. It's pretty violent and does not shy away from it.
Tim Seeley has been given the keys to bodybags, Jason Pearson's comic and this reintroduction does not disappoint. Over the top violence, horrible attitudes and stupidly fun fights.

BONUS POINTS
So these are titles you will be more familiar with, and you wouldn't consider as indie but I'm including because they're pretty damn good dawg
Usagi Yojimbo: Ten Thousand plums
for - Everyone
It's Usagi. This is the rock in the storm. It's always good. You should go back and read all of Usagi, trust me, just... just do it. I'll wait.
Sonic the Hedgehog
for - everyone
Sonic comics are this anomaly in the Sonic franchise for being Really Freaking Good, the Babylon Rogues got a lot of love this year and that made me whoop with excitement every time they showed up.
Transformers
for - Teen to adult
With Daniel Warren Johnson's run finishing, we have an amazing complete story with amazing art and some of the best story telling that transformers has ever had. This is up there right next to James Robert's MTMTE-Lost Light as the best of the best. And remember, there are only 24 issues, nothing comes after that.
Harley Quinn X Elvira
for - teen to adult
I wouldn't include this if not for the facts that Elvira comics run at a pace of dick joke a minute, and that the writing is Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner bringing back roller derby Coney Island Harley for one last big dumb adventure. Seriously it is so dumb.
Here a post about the wonderful colorist of my comic HAVANA SPLIT Maggie: https://www.instagram.com/_leevolt_/
Please go check her work because she's a talented, brillant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique full author and I thank the day she agreed for this collab!
Without her magic I'm nothing, I'm devoted to her hands! (So in complete admiration I made this tribute portrait of her)
