You ever heard of hypnagogic hallucinations? Basically, it’s when you’re falling asleep and your brain decides to fucking jumpscare you with some hyperrealistic event/object (p much the opposite of sleep paralysis--it stops you from going to sleep while you’re falling asleep, while sleep paralysis stops you from waking up while you’re waking up). I’ve had them a few times (I think I have them more often than most people do bc of my ADHD, as my brain is weird about shutting down for the night), and they’ve always been auditory for me. Here they are:
1. A while ago--I don’t remember when, and this may have happened on multiple occasions--I just couldn’t fucking sleep. Why? Everytime I closed my eyes and started drifting off, my brain decided that I needed to hear a huge BOOM (I also felt a huge jolt) to wake me right the fuck back up. That wasn’t very creative, but it sure was annoying. It was like my brain was trying to jumpstart me.
2. A couple months ago, I had been trying to lucid dream for a while so I had stopped taking my melatonin (which basically helps me shut down my brain easier). That time, I just heard a very sinister laugh--not the maniacal cackle of a madman, but the slow chuckle of pure evil. I didn’t get much sleep that night.
3. (this was last night) Although I had read several chapters of Uzumaki and watched an episode of Supernatural earlier that day, I was convinced that I had washed the nightmare-inducing shit out of my mind with an hour of watching Parks & Rec. As I settled down, I heard a very deep voice quietly say, “We’re here.” I fucking bolted out of my room.
