Many Viking-era skulls have been found with horizontal grooves carved into the teeth. The current theory holds that Vikings filled these grooves with colored enamel as a type of teeth tattoos. Robert Eggers, the film's director, liked the idea and had it incorporated into the design of the Valkyrie.
