okay maybe kind of a hot (lukewarm?) take...I know a lot of female characters are written to be incompetent (usually by male but sometimes female writers) so she can be saved by the male lead or just because it's a shallow way to further the plot (not good writing)
but I do wonder when and where this critique begins to become misogyny. because there's no lack of posts that talk about how strangely endearing pathetic male characters are, how we love them even if they repeatedly fuck up or are a fuck up
idk maybe sometimes a female character IS incompetent and it's part of her character. maybe she's weak and inexperienced, and while people can find this endearing in male characters (and will write meta on said character) it makes that female character unpalatable to people bc people's idea of an "acceptable" female character is only when she's competent, a badass, but nice all the time
you're not supposed to like a character all the time. sometimes they're supposed to infuriate you, you disagree with them, and you get mad that they do something wrong. that makes them well-rounded. if you can accept all that in a male character, you should too for a female character (doubly even so if she's a woc)
