how was everyone's 4th of july holiday weekend? mine was great! did the usual independence day type of things...took a road trip, ate BBQ, watched some fireworks & flew some hawks. uh WAIT...whaaaaaaaat???

YES! one thing that i've been meaning to scratch off my bucket list for a while is to participate in falconry...the ancient & spectacular art of hunting with birds of prey :) i didn't realize that a master falconer & his facility were a mere 90 minutes away from me in hadley, ma, so i took my holiday day off to the next level by trying something uniquely fun & new! now, chris davis is an amazing educator & you can see his passion & dedication towards his hawks. the first 45 minutes of the session involved learning everything about falconry...the history, qualifications, etc. & also of the birds of prey themselves...the difference between hawks & falcons, raising, breeding, training, etc. then, the SUPER FUN part of the session came...the actual hawk walk! our small group of 5 took turns flying 2 harris hawks...an adult male & an immature female. did you know that harris hawks are the only birds of prey that hunt in a unit, just like a wolf pack? see, betcha you didn't! i learned so much that day! i'm such a nerd about raptors now, hahaha! our hawk walk wasn't an actual "hunt" as this event was more for introductory & education purposes. still, it was really amazing to have the hawks take off from their perches & fly to our gloves to snack on small morsels of meat :) just to be that close to such wild & powerful creatures, perfectly trained & perched on your arm...it was definitely a cool experience & something i'd LOVE to do again & again ^_^

Our hawks, Killary and Rua. Rua is the oldest female and the leader of the hawks so she is always sitting higher up than him. You can't tell but she's also much bigger!
