Thanks so much to everyone who suggested characters! I tried to pick ones I’ve never drawn before or haven’t drawn in a long time. Some I’m more pleased with than others, but it was fun getting a feel for each of them.

Harlots is an AMAZING series with great writing and characters (not to mention great representation compared to so many other period shows), but I will forever be salty about how Haxby’s character was written. Catch me on my deathbed, still bitter that all of Edward Hogg’s talent was wasted.

Haxby the Unintended

You know… I have this inkling that the writers would be puzzled over our harping on about Haxby.

Within with the series itself, he was clearly not meant to function as anything more than a throwaway antagonist. I think this is a case where the actor carries a part further than intended.

I 100% do not believe Charlotte and Haxby’s hallway liaison was meant to be so sexy, so charged, or as revealing in regards to Haxby’s character. 

Re-watch that scene again, and you’ll pick up something startlingly new each time. Godamnit, the layers to this scene…

And then we have Marney in episode 6. He’s such a fun Irish fancy boy. I’d be so game for him. And yet… their union felt very conventional and structured. 

Charlotte/Haxby was charged and visceral and strangely vulnerable, Charlotte/Marney was sweet. It was real sweet, but… it didn’t have the spark I was anticipating, nor did it command my attention.

Within Harlots, Haxby is like the potted plant in the pristine Japanese tea garden. My eye keeps sliding his way, my fingers itching. I wish I could fix his storyline. This show has an extraordinary array of complex women living fascinating lives, so this is just a minor quibble about a manservant… but it was just… so close… so close.

I mean look at this, look at the way he’s holding her hand:

The sex at this point is angry and frustrated and lusty, and yet he’s clasping her hand with absolute gentleness.

Oh well, I just love complicated ships.

Anti-shippers of Haxlotte are so one-dimensional. They are like GeraltxTriss shippers who got so easily brain-washed by "sweet n easy” writing  by writers/creators. They do not see beyond flawed characters, their interactions and interesting complexity!
