Tried the Spicy Baja Smashburger with a side of Haystack Onions. They were grrrreat!
Smashburger – Fairfax, Virginia
A couple of weeks ago I was in Virginia, and look what I found – Smashburger!
I got my first chance to eat at the Colorado based hamburger joint.
Their burgers are famous for starting as plump 100% Certified Angus Beef meatballs before they are SMASHED on a butter-glazed grill.
How good does that already sound?
Smashing the burger with a special tool they invented, the beef is caramelized creating a sear that locks in the juices.
Then they dress the burger, and top it off with a butter-toasted artisan bun.
Because their burgers are made fresh (never from frozen), they ask their customers to have a seat, and they'll bring 'em out when they are ready.
This process doesn't take long – maybe 5-10 minutes. I would compare the wait to Shake Shack. Entirely acceptable.
The place was busy so we used that time to find a table. Smashburger was packed with families enjoying lunch together, and those waiting for take-out.
When we finally found a spot, my gal and I admired our son's ingenuity.
Our burgers finally arrived, and I was excited about the presentation.
Smashburger obviously wants their customers to admire their ingredients because they lay out the sandwich opened faced... as if to brag.
And boast all they want if this is what I'm gonna get every time.
I ordered the Classic Smash, and it was one juicy piece of meat.
This particular burger didn't suit my tastes entirely, but I wanted to try the hamburger they are probably known for.
I loved the size of the patty, but I wasn't crazy about the Smash Sauce. It's not because it wasn't good. I'm just a fussy little princess when it comes to condiments.
A Smashburger on the menu that WOULD suit my tastes was the one my gal ordered.
The BBQ Bacon Cheddar is applewood-smoked bacon, American cheese, yellow mustard, ketchup, pickles and Haystack Onions on an egg bun.
The one bite I took was delicious and full of flavor. I could see get this burger over and over again when I visit.
Now, lets talk about those Haystack Onions. They were great! These are my absolute favorite type of onion rings. I would come back to Smashburger again and again simply to order these.
Heck... I nearly got another order of 'em when we left.
And my gal's sweet potato fries were pretty good too. They were on the crispier side... just how I like 'em.
The final thing I have to say about Smashburger. I love how they have one regional burger on their menu. At this location it was the Capital.
This idea makes me want to visit more locations across the country to collect try them all.
I seriously hope Manhattan gets a Smashburger. I would get those Haystack Onions on a weekly basis, and give them my highest honor by calling them a Snack Fixation.
