Every Possible Pynch Moment in The Raven Boys Part 3
While they waited, Ronan decided to finally take up the task of teaching Adam how to drive a stick shift. For several minutes, it seemed to be going well, as the BMW had an easy clutch, Ronan was brief and to the point with his instruction, and Adam was a quick study with no ego to get in the way.
Then- it had to happen eventually- Adam stalled the car. From the passenger seat, Ronan began to swear at Adam. It was a long, involved swear, using every forbidden word possible, often in compound-word form. As Adam stared at his lap, penitent, he mused that there was something musical about Ronan when he swore, a careful and loving precision to the way he fit the words together, a black-painted poetry. It was far less hateful sounding than when he didnât swear.
Ronan finished with, âFor the love of⊠Parrish, take some care, this is not your motherâs 1971 Honda Civic.â
Adam lifted his head and said, âThey didnât start making the Civic until â73.â
There was a flash of fangs from the passenger seat, but before Ronan truly had time to strike, they both heard Gansey callâŠ(ch. 25) (Adam POV)
I know I took an entire scene out but the whole thing together is the most ridiculous thing Iâve seen. First, the fact that Ronan had mentioned? teaching Adam stick and finally doing it is cute to me? I donât know if itâs because Ronan expresses himself physically or if he understands Adamâs resistance to âcharityâ but one of my favorite Ronan things is how he teaches Adam stuff. Or gives him things he needs in a backwards way. He speaks the Adam Parrish lingo as it were. Second, not to bum us all out but Adam zoning out here hurts because you know that getting yelled at equals instinctual detachment. The fact that he muses on how lovely Ronan sounds when he swears expresses that he isnât actually upset or triggered by Ronan going off on him. That is honestly a Big Deal because it means he trust Ronan. Third, I like how Ronan tapers off when he realizes heâs being Extra and Adamâs response is to be a smartass. And Ronan gets geared up again. Adam Parrish is just as much an instigator as Ronan Lynch. They like fighting with each other the weirdos.Â
[Blue stuck her head into the driverâs side of the window] âLooks like itâs going well. Is that what that smell is?â
Without replying, Ronan climbed out of the car and slammed the door. (ch. 25)
My poor gay son :( I like the fact that itâs easy to see when something upsets Ronan. Not in an angry way but like bummed out/sad/scared way. He gets quiet. I honestly wish weâd scene this bit from Blueâs pov because Iâm positive she would have picked up something from it.Â
âWhat language is that?â Blue asked.
Adam and Ronan answered as one: âLatin.â (ch. 25)
So if you re-read the books closely together youâll find that this ends up happening quite a bit???? They unintentionally sync up. #compatibleÂ
âI donât really care,â Ronan said. He stroked Chainsawâs head with a single finger and she tilted her beak up in response. It was a strange moment in a strange evening, and if it had happened the day before, it wouldâve struck Adam that he rarely saw such thoughtless kindness from Ronan. (ch. 29) (Adam POV)
There is a ghost living in the warehouse. A ghost youâve been friends with for like a year. Letâs still take a moment to notice Ronan being cute.Â
The apartment felt oppressive without anyone else in the main room. Part of Adam wanted to lure Ronan out of his room for company, but most of him realized that Ronan was, in his unappealing and unspoken way, grieving for Noah. (Ch. 31) (Adam POV)
I want to know what these two did in their alone time together before all the magic stuff. Like, if he had gotten Ronan out of his room what the hell would they even be doing??? Anyway, he wants company but he gets that Ronan is grieving Noah so heâll let him be.Â
âWhereâs my brother?â
âNot here.â
âNow you are lying.â
Adam shrugged. âYeah. I am.â
Declan started past him, but Adam held out his arm, blocking the door. âNowâs really not a good time. And Gansey said it wasnât a good idea for you two to talk without him around. I think heâs right.â
Adam knew only this: There was no way that Declan could speak to Ronan right now. Not if Ronan had been drinking, not if Declan was already angry. Without Gansey here, there was sure to be a fight. That was the only thing that was important. (ch. 31)
Have I ever mentioned how in love I am with the Ronan Lynch Protection Squad? I love this entire scene particularly because of Ganseyâs absences. I also love that Adam is completely nonplus about Declan. (could write a post only on that tbh)Â
[Declan blames Gansey for Ronan getting kicked out] âOh no,â he said. He hoped Ronan was listening. âRonan did that all by himself. I donât know when you both are going to see that only Ronan can keep himself in Aglionby. Some day, he has to pick for himself. Until then, youâre both wasting your time.â (ch. 31)
If there is one thing we know about Adam is that he hates wasted potential and opportunity. He hates lack of ambition. But mostly, he hates having his autonomy taken. To me, this scene is significant for that purpose. He may not like the choices Ronan is making but he sure as hell believes heâs the only one who has the right to make them. Heâll argue with both Declan and Gansey alike over that.Â
âHeâs moving out,â Declan said. âRemind Gansey of that. No Aglionby, no Monmouth.â
Then youâve killed him, Adam thought, because he couldnât imagine Ronan living under a roof with his brother. He couldnât imagine Ronan living under a roof without Gansey, period. (ch. 31)
THIS IS SO HEARTBREAKING I HATE IT I HATE HOW ADAM KNOWS THAT THIS WILL DESTROY RONAN I HATE IT.Â
Both Adam and Blue looked up at the sound of footsteps crossing the floor towards them. It was Ronan, holding something under his arm. He cautiously lowered himself until he sat cross-legged beside Adam and then sighed heavily, as if he had been part of the conversation to this point and it tired him. Blue was equal parts relieved and disappointed at his presence effectively ending any more talk about kissing.
âDo you want to hold her?â Ronan asked. (ch. 32) (Blue POV)
Letâs be real. He heard that entire conversation. I always get so emotional about this scene. He just sort went âwell. I guess sheâs staying then.â and decided to extend this olive branch. He lets go of that jealousy because he knows there is no point to it. I just.Â
âShe wants you again,â Blue said, because it was clear that she did. Ronan accepted the bird and stroked the feathers on the back of her head.
âYou look like a super villain with your familiar,â Adam said.
Ronanâs smile cut his face, but he looked kinder than Blue had ever seen him, like the raven in his hand was his heart, finally laid bare. (ch. 32)
Too fucking true Miss Sargent. Who knows what happened in that damn warehouse between Declan leaving and Blue showing up (gdi so many unseen moments) but all I know is Ronan is at his most fragile this night. Heâs grieving Noah, the whole thing with Declan (that Iâm positive he heard), Gansey not being there, Adam talking about kisses and compliments with Blue. Over all this can be seen more specifically as a Ronan Moment but in relation to pynch itâs the comment that Adam makes. These two speak in jokes and jabs and asshole remarks. That little bit at the end has nothing to do with Blue, she isnât a part of it and I like that.
âBarrington Whelk,â Adam and Ronan replied in unison. They exchanged a wry look. (ch. 35) (Blue POV)
See?! what is with the synchronization. *cough horror movie twins cough* I find it hilarious that this happens often enough for them to get annoyed and also that it happens BEFORE Adam wakes the ley line.Â
Part 1 Par 2Â
number 9 for the ask thing!!
Thank you, friend! (gosh this one is hard.......)
9. Describe yourself in one sentence.
Iâm the type of person whoâs optimistic, but realistic, in that I always tries to be kind and to find the good in people, but I understand that the bad sometimes outweighs the good and that not everyone deserves my kindness.Â
