I saw a patient described as “combative.” I got there and he was very guarded and watching John Wick.
I started naming the moves in a fight scene (thanks to my martial arts upbringing)—and suddenly he opened up.
He asked if I could stay to watch with him. I realized he wasn’t combative. He was lonely.

I saw a patient described as “difficult” and when I visited, she yelled through tears, “I want it back!”
She had a journal put away before her surgery, which was delayed. We talked for an hour.
The journal came back, but by then she was feeling better. I guess I became her journal.

I get called to patients who are “combative, non-compliant, difficult, nonverbal.”
Very often there is a reason. I sit in that middle space between procedure and person, between medicine and machines, as a presence, and I have found that if our separation is a wound, it is grace that mends us in meeting there.
I know the Pitt writers would go fucking feral if they found out putting through a certain type of fluids through the blood transfusion machine can make it explode
I also know Jack Abbot prefers the Level 1 infuser over the Belmont mass transfuser. I just do.
