I’m not sure where I’d be if I didn’t somehow cross paths with the His Dark Materials series. I’ve long forgotten how I first got my hands on the books but that memory alone isn’t incredibly important. These stories kept reappearing in my life over and over purely by chance begging me to look deeper.
I’m incredibly glad that I did. While I see Pullman’s books through a very religious lens I don’t think that’s the only way to incorporate the messages into your life. While many of the messages were things I already believed, these books cemented them deep into my brain. I’d recommend them to somebody looking for purpose and meaning above any religious text or self help book.
Plus it’s just a truly brilliant work of fiction from a surface level. The amount of worldbuilding and detail is something I wish more authors would be willing to use in their stories. It feels like Pullman could write stories for another hundred years and we’d still learn new things.
