Hello all! For the Horizon Day of Service I decided to help out my native pollinators and maybe even some monarch butterflies! The solitary bees that frequent my garden LOVED my basil flowers when they went to flower last year, so I allowed all my basil to go to flower a bit early this year to help them out!

Then I planted even MORE basil so that when my first wave of flowers dies off, the bees have some more!

I’ve been making a valiant struggle against the grass around where I planted the milkweed, but that darn stuff sure is tenacious! Hopefully they get a bit bigger soon, and return next year!

Finally, the bees really liked my nasturtiums in the late fall last year, so I’m starting some more sprouts to plant! Only one has sprouted so far, but I can see the others disturbing the soil! They should sprout soon.

Horizon Day of Service

TODAY is Horizon Day of Service, a fan event started by @finrays! As her original post says, the idea is to volunteer, plant, or donate to match with the theme of “caring about the world you live in.” 

I used to volunteer at The Raptor Trust, a wild bird rehabilitation and nature education center. I’ve donated some myself. If you send a screenshot to my ask box on July 22 showing you’ve donated $5 or more, I’ll write you an approximate drabble (about 100 words). (You choose which part of the confirmation screen you feel is sufficiently identifiable.) Please let me know if you have any questions!  Details: 

Drabbles do not have to be related to the Horizon series. 

Drabbles do have to be either gen or a ship I’ve written before. (I’ll also take Aloy/Vanasha or Shepard/Aria.)

I reserve the right to refuse any prompt for any reason, whether or not you have donated. 

This will run July 22 only. Most of the day I’ll be doing other writing-work and doing this in between, so it will run whenever I start until whenever I get tired (probably late morning to late night EST).

I went on a trash pickup walk for my Horizon Day of Service!

The park trail itself was very well-kept, but the walk over there and back netted me a decent amount. Also made a detour to the creek, where I found some washed-up junk.

Biggest piece of trash: a mudflap

Saddest piece of trash: a donut box on the side of the road with one powdered donut inside, and several more scattered over several feet in the direction of traffic. :c

Heathkit H8 & H89

Alex Bodnar is a fellow H89 geek, and the one area he likes to play is with floppy disks.  Name a floppy tape for the H8 or H89, and he can write to it.  Soft sector, or Hard sector?  Single Side or Double Side? Single Density or Double Density?

I dig that Wintek Branded H19 with the amber picture tube, which was how he interfaced with the H8.

Keeping On Theme, I would like to request a drabble involving Eris and Hawkmoon/The Traveler's Light-Hawk birdsona and/or Crow :)

Eris Morn studies the Traveler as a researcher, not a supplicant. Under the Tree of Silver Wings she had taken its silence as a constant, not a variable. 

When she hears of the hawk, the equations need to be adjusted.

She stands in the grove, silver Light and Darkness washing from the tree around her so manifest even she can see them. Her Ahamkara bone relic seethes in the usual way, its yellow highlights brighter in the glare. 

Would you have given me a sign, in the pit? She wonders. Would you have given me a hawk?

In a way, it had. It had lit her way. But that had been a lonely endeavor, and what passed between the Young Wolf and the Crow was not. Perhaps that is what unsettles her mind, stirs her hand. 

(Later, she will learn that Savathûn, too, was unsettled.)

Eris conjures smoke from the bone fragment. She draws the shape of a hawk in black, yellow and green. It is merely a figurine, with no puissance. 

She watches it fly. She goes back to work. 

(And then the Temperament lore happens.)

For Horizon Day of Service!

I'd like to request something with Eris/Toland and/or Eris & Mara (your call). Don't know if it can fit in a drabble, but bonus points if one is third-wheeling the other (platonic or romantic depending on who's tagging along.)

(Thank you!) Eris can tell Toland is afraid. He flits back and forth across the black-and-white tile. His hums, his false starts, echo the droning wind that fills the vast voids of the Ascendant Plane. On either side of the three people on the tiled floor there is an immeasurable white-and-navy gulf. Where Toland once acted as if he deserved to ingratiate himself into Oryx’s court, standing on the cusp of Mara’s strikes him uncharacteristically silent.

“Well?” Mara says. The queen of the Reef stands before a table littered with shards of glass. Each shape she glues or puzzle-piece-clicks into its neighbor creates a corresponding connection in the material Dreaming City. She has asked Eris to help.

And Toland has asked Eris to rend the rift between himself and the queen.

Eris supposes that will have to happen naturally. 

For now, she scoops the lightning-wisp up. She tugs him close to her chest, against the riveted leather armor. 

“My queen,” Eris intones. “We ask entrance.”

Mara is under no false impression that it is Eris who needs to ask. Her eyes flash like a cat’s as she looks at Toland. 

“This one is most dangerous when preaching supplication,” Mara says. “But I suppose he can be trusted with pan-dimensional glass.”

“In our last meeting you showed force,” Toland says. “This time, delicacy. A true ruler balances the knife called tact.”

Mara scoffs softly, almost fondly, and picks up another thick shard of glass. Eris moves to help her, Toland a memory of warmth in her hands.

Cue me just rattling a cup, asking for any morsel from any media we've ever overlapped on ever. <3

(<3 I am tempted to dig around for something new to say about the Former, but also to write Death Stranding fic for the first time.) Later, when Fragile tried to remember moments of peace, she grabbed on to one in particular: a short timefall storm. 

She and Sam had recently met. The world through the curtain of rain was gray and blue and cold, orange lichen dappling rocks. It was beautiful and fecund, loud with water and chiralium, almost more so because she didn’t think the man beside her was beautiful at all. In their travels an unspoken, fraternal sense of safety had stolen over her business partnership with Sam. The ease didn’t help her forget her guilt after Middle Knot City, not exactly, but it made the guilt feel distant. Distorted the timeframe like the new rain. 

Her aged fingers curled dry and stiff around the handle of her umbrella. The physical discomfort was harder for her to ignore than the old mental scars. And she admitted she had sad standards to be grateful Sam didn’t comment on her restlessness, her stiff movements, her body at all. Higgs had done that to her, too — lowered her standards for the world.

But they lived in a low world. Higgs had been right about that. Fragile wouldn’t charge herself a toll for feeling safe for a moment.
