❝ you mumble in your sleep. ❞
night and day are impossible to hone in here. no windows, clotted lights dimmed by something too old to decipher, fresh enough to smell ; mold, and rain. even here [ where is here ? ], you can’t escape gotham’s constant gloom. there’s only one place this could be. you’re not sure it matters. each roll of thunder is audible in the rattle of metal somewhere out of sight, each crack of lightning a snap of god’s fingers right under his nose. he jolts awake like he’s been struck by it every time, but today, tonight, everything is still. the pitter - patter of rats’ feet is a lullaby, some far - off faucet left dripping him to sleep.
it feels as though he’s barely blinked before the familiar gravel of the only other voice in this goddamn place jars him awake again. he should be used to it by now [ when is now ? ], enough not to flinch like a child in a haunted house, eyes gone wide and blinking as if that helps you see better in the dark, but he does. when is now ? no sunrise, no moon ; just the comings and goings of a clown.
how long has he been standing there ? jason should’ve noticed. fucking freak ; arms crossed, head tilted— FUCK OFF, he wants to say, but his throat is dry. and sore, and his lip split and chapped, and he’s too tired to shout. that’s not a good sign, a voice tells him, new and so, so different than the one before him, deeper and larger, too close to home, not close enough. if he was coming, he’d’ve been here already. jason’s not sure it matters. he just hums, humoring, and swallows before speaking. “ what do i say ? ”
