Okay so we know in the book Raoul is on 6 month leave before going on an expedition to the North Pole and there was a 99.99% chance he was not coming back because they hadn't heard from the other expedition in years.

Okay I'm probably just dumb for just realizing this but I feel like that's definitely a factor in the reason he so recklessly risks his life for Christine. Puts in perspective: "Do you want to get yourself killed?’
