HLVRAI Warm-up Doodle #15

(I'm counting this as my warmup shhhhhhh) Featuring: one of my favorite scenes, Headcrab!Benrey/Bottlecap from @kyanitedragon and @blacktobackmesa 's fanfics, and Benrey with a raven!

I was rereading Camouflage and was once again struck with the idea of Tommy bringing Headcrab!Benrey to his birthday and Gordon being more than a little freaked out. But neither of them fully knows that the other is aware it’s Benrey, so they get through this whole conversation dancing around the elephant in the room with pure hypotheticals about whether or not Tommy could really trust his dear little friend “Bottlecap”, which is absolutely not a name Tommy just thought of on the spot to protect Benrey’s identity

And meanwhile Benrey’s just so out of it and exhausted from the Xen possession and boss battle that he’s just off and on snoozing and gnawing on the pizza that Tommy set out for him, totally oblivious

These are brilliant ideas and so in-character!!

I can see Tommy's original plan being to tell Gordon and everyone else the truth about Benrey. But then Gordon goes on and on venting about how horrible the ResCas and especially Xen and Benrey was, and that's when Tommy panicks and goes with the "Bottlecap" lie.

I'm also loving the added touch of, while this unintentional 3D chess of a mind game is going on, that Benrey is off in the corner just being a creacher.

Follow-up to @kyanitedragon ‘s fic, Camouflage. Gordon takes issue with Tommy’s additional party guest. Tommy won’t let anything happen to his headcrab friend. Benrey’s just happily falling asleep with an entire pizza in his mouth.
