Sirius smiles gently, looking up at James and Lily. He relishes in the relief that washes over him. He’s been so strung up ever since James’ patronus woke him up relaying the message that something was wrong. Sirius is glad that he feels like he can breathe again. “There’s nothing wrong with baby Potter-Evans.”
“Are you sure?” James asks, looking like he’s seconds away from crying. “Lily said she felt something like– like a flutter or–or, what was it, darling?”
Lily lets out a breath. “It just felt like something was off. I haven’t felt something like it before. Are you sure it’s okay in there, Sirius?”
“He or she, darling,” James mumbles, wiping his eyes under his glasses.
“Is he or she– I feel like it’s a boy, James, in my heart. Did I tell you?”
James is crying in earnest now. “I feel like it’s a boy, too!” James looks at Sirius. “Please tell me our son is all right.”
Sirius laughs. “He’s fine. I’m sure you’ve heard about baby kicks before. That’s what you felt, Lily. And it’s good! It means baby is right where we’d expect him to be, development wise. I still want you to stop by St.Mungo’s in the morning, you’re overdue for a check-up anyway. I’ll be there anytime after 7 a.m. But I can tell you right now that everything is peachy–”
Lily all but lunges at Sirius, engulfing him in a tight grip. The scent of her shampoo washes over him. “Thank you. Sirius, I love you. Thank you. Sorry for waking you up for something silly.”
Sirius shakes his head. He drapes his arms across Lily’s shoulders and pulls her closer to him. “I always want you to wake me up. And this isn’t silly, it’s important.”
“I could make out with you right now, Sirius,” James says absentmindedly. He sets both his hands on Lily’s midriff. “Do you think he’ll do it again?”
Sirius nods. “Definitely. It’ll probably get tedious after a while. Sorry, Lily flower.”
Lily shakes her head, grinning. “It’s too precious to get tedious, I think. It sort of reminds me that he’s actually in there! Growing organs and fingernails and getting strong enough so that he can join us over here soon.”
James lets out an actual sob. “He’s going to have such small fingernails.”
Sirius laughs, loud and sincere. He lets himself sit with James and Lily for a second. Then he says, “I think I should head back now. Remus wanted to come but the full moon yesterday was sort of awful. He couldn’t apparate. I should tell him that everything is fine”
“Awe, Remus,” Lily says, rubbing her bump. “Give him a kiss from me.”
“And me,” James says. “Two kisses from me, though. Better kisses, too. My kisses are better than Lily’s.”
Sirius laughs again. “Yeah, no way you’re a better kisser than Lily.”
“Thank you, Sirius,” Lily says, giggly and light. She kisses Sirius’ cheek before he apparates back home.
...
“Everything is fine,” Sirius announces as soon as he’s in their kitchen. Remus startles from where he’s sitting, head resting on the kitchen table. The smell of chamomile and Remus are all around Sirius and he breathes in deeply.
This full moon really had been cruel. Remus’ left cheekbone is yellow and his undereyes are ink blue. He looks bone tired but still smiles at Sirius when he catches his eye.
“Thank Godric,” Remus says, mostly half asleep. He blinks. “Are you sure?”
Sirius kisses Remus’ bruised cheek twice. “Lily and James send kisses.”
“Cute,” Remus says, smiling tiredly.
“Baby was doing somersaults and Lily got alarmed.” Sirius explains. He then grins. “Not to brag but I’ve definitely consolidated the godfather spot tonight.”
Remus smiles more brightly. “Also cute.”
Sirius sits next to Remus in their dark kitchen. Remus rests his head on Sirius’ shoulder and Sirius performs another healing spell on Remus’ cheekbone. Werewolf-induced injuries were stubborn.
“Would you want to have children?’ Sirius asks softly. “With me, I mean.”
Sirius feels Remus smile against his shoulder. “Children, yes. With you? I’m not sure, Sirius, you’re going to have to let me sleep on it.”
“Har Har.”
“I guess the star names are cool. And the money that comes with your family name isn’t too shabby, either. But is that enough?”
“You’re hilarious, darling,” Sirius says, helping Remus stand up. “Let’s get you to bed.”
Remus resists Sirius pulling him up the stairs for a second. He looks at Sirius, expression open and honest. “There’s no one else I’d want to do it with, darling. But you know that. You have to know that.”
Sirius does. He kisses Remus’ cheekbone again. “This one is from me. And of course I know.”
