Random question: How much of an issue is acne with tattooing? I have acne on my chest/upper back and shoulders, which is where I most want to be tattooed. (I'm 22 and tired of waiting)
Hey there, sorry this is so late. Acne is not a problem in regards to tattooing, it just means that you will need to take extra care with your healing since your skin is more fragile, and you might find that you need to get a touch up on your tattoo if the lines have gone through an open area or a pimple, or if any open up during healing. Most tattooists I know do touch ups for free within a month of the first session, but discuss it with your artist first, it might be an area thing. If your tattooist won’t tattoo over acne, just find someone who will. Whatever they tell you for why they won’t is either personal or bullshit. It’s not any more unhygienic than regular skin, and the process of tattooing should involve antibacterial soaps, thorough washing and sterile equipment to prevent surface bacteria from entering the skin as its tattooed.Skin with acne is only more prone to infection because it is more delicate and fragile, and thus more easily torn and damaged in both the tattooing process and in the healing process, both things that extend the healing time of your tattoo which is where the infection risk is.With the healing process, your skin is going to be more sensitive anywhere that you have acne so make sure you do a test with the aftercare cream to make sure you don’t have a bad reaction to it first, and trial a few different ones if you do. You’ll need to be using that cream several times a day for between one to two weeks, so when you test it, test it for a full day or two, several times a day since some things might have a residue build up that could make your acne worse ( eg: anything with lanolin makes me break out in rashes), or that could dry your skin too much and give you scars.
I reccomend a combination of frequent antibacterial soap washes and palmers brand cocoa butter. If you can’t wash your tattoo several times a day due to work or something, bepanthen first aid is the best antiseptic cream I’ve found, and put the cocoa butter on when you sleep to make sure it doesn’t dry out.
Other than that, make sure you don’t scratch it and if your tattoo sticks to your sheets when you wake up, drag them into the shower with you and soak them off instead of tearing them off. Or wear a t-shirt and save your sheets, but soak and peel gently off. No scratching and no direct sunlight till its healed, and use sunscreen or clear zinc on it always if you’re out in the sun because a sunburn will fade and spread your ink.
