Without fail, every time a woman is talking about how she does not want to have children and never wants to be pregnant and how medical professionals, romantic interests and family members keep trying to bulldoze her decision and keep expecting her to change her mind because motherhood is something that is expected of all women and it is abhorrent to think a woman could not desire it, a random mother spawns in the comments to be like “Well, actually, you never know! I didn’t want children and then I got pregnant and I realized I love being a mama and I have five little babies now! Could happen to you! 🥰”

Sister, keep that to yourself or make your own goddamn post, you are ignoring that woman’s central concern and belittling her, you don’t even think you’re doing it. Formerly childfree women who ended up having children and loving it are like detransitioners in the sense that there is nothing inherently wrong with changing your mind about having children or realizing you were mistaken about your gender identity but immediately weaponizing your indecision to tell people that the barriers to healthcare and the violations of their bodily autonomy and the way society ignores that person’s wishes is actually okay because you were wrong. Some people do know themselves.

Somehow he's a registered voter now. Called the county clerk. Me: My cat got summoned for jury duty. Clerk: Is the name correct on the summons? Me: Yes, but he's a cat. Clerk: Is Felix Martinez a legal resident of this county? Me: He's a legal cat. Clerk: Sir, if the name matches our records, he needs to appear or file an exemption. Me: He can't file anything. He has paws. Clerk: You can file on his behalf. Me: Under what exemption? There's no box for "is a cat." Clerk: (pause) Check "unable to serve due to medical reasons." Me: What's the medical reason? Clerk: He's a cat. Me: That's not a medical condition. Clerk: It is if it prevents him from serving. Sent in the form. Got rejected two weeks later. "Insufficient documentation. Please provide medical professional's statement." Took the letter to my vet. Me: I need you to write that my cat can't do jury duty. Vet: Why is your cat summoned for jury duty? Me: Excellent question. No good answer. Vet: This is the weirdest request I've gotten. Me: Can you just write that he's medically unfit to serve? Vet: On what grounds? Me: He's a cat. Vet: (started typing) "Patient is unable to serve due to species-related limitations including inability to speak, read, or comprehend legal proceedings." Me: Perfect. Sent it in. Got another rejection. "Summons is mandatory. Failure to appear will result in contempt of court." My roommate thought this was hilarious. Roommate: Felix is going to jail. Me: This is serious. Roommate: Bring him to court. See what happens. Decided that was actually the only option left. Day of jury duty, put Felix in his carrier. Brought the entire paper trail of rejection letters. Checked in at the courthouse. Clerk: Name? Me: Felix Martinez. Clerk: (looked at the cat carrier) Is that Felix? Me: Yes. Clerk: (long stare) He's a cat. Me: I've been saying that for six weeks. Clerk: Why didn't you file an exemption? Me: I filed three. All rejected. Showed her the letters. She read through them, expression shifting from confusion to disbelief. Clerk: Someone rejected the veterinary documentation? Me: Twice. Clerk: (called her supervisor over) You need to see this. Supervisor read everything. Looked at Felix. Looked at me. Supervisor: How did a cat get registered to vote? Me: You tell me. Supervisor: This is a data error. Me: Took you six weeks to figure that out. They dismissed Felix immediately. Apologized for the inconvenience. Supervisor: We'll remove him from the voter registry. Me: Appreciate it. Supervisor: (pause) Out of curiosity, how would he have voted? Me: Probably whatever party supports universal treats. Got a formal apology letter a week later and a voter registration card. For me this time. Apparently I wasn't registered, but my cat was. Roommate: Felix committed voter fraud. Me: Felix committed nothing. He's innocent. Roommate: That's what they all say. Felix is sleeping on the jury summons now. Project Hail Mary Fic Recs Part 1

I've divided recs into non-explicit and explicit categories, listed from shortest to longest word count. The fics are Grace-and-Rocky-centric and usually feature Eridian culture/worldbuilding.

Before we get started, I'm on the hunt for more aroace Grace, especially fics involving QPR Gracerocky or platonic sex. If anyone has recs, please let me know!!

NON-EXPLICIT FICS

i want us both to eat well by peglarpapers/@peglarpapers (Gen, 2k) Grace and Rocky have very different cultural values regarding cannibalism. Culture shock, emotions, and cannibalism as a metaphor for love.

Leaving a Mark by startingatmidnight/@startingatmidnight (Teen & Up, 7k) Grace got a crappy tattoo of the Drake equation in grad school and Eridians have strong cultural beliefs about body modification. Worldbuilding and emotions aplenty.

aren't you too old to be afraid? by spqr (Teen & Up, 8k) Grace meets Rocky's parents and sees Rocky's pebble photos. Grace watches Home Alone with Adrian and has emotions about his barely-remembered childhood.

SCHEDULE B, SECTION 4: Declaration of exotic pet by doomedblade/@doomedblade (Teen & Up, 12k) Rocky imports Grace to Erid as an exotic pet to keep Grace safe (and also to commit tax fraud). Flustered customs officials, Rocky's 93-person mate cluster, and general hilarity.

Without a Doubt by voidknight/@eldritch-elrics (Gen, 18k) Grace learns how to speak linguistically complex Eridian. Regional Eridian accents, fun Eridian OCs, and language learning as an expression of friendship.

Lost in Translation by Mayasynth/@quekerahkerah (Teen & Up, 23k - Ongoing) Grace remembers more of his backstory and has a gloriously messy aroace identity crisis. As an aro aspec person, this fic brought me to the verge of tears multiple times.

I'm Ryland Grace - AMA by sly_as_an_alpaca/@anxiette (Teen & Up, 23k - Ongoing) Social media fic where Grace and Rocky, on Erid, get real-time access to Earth's Internet. Funny, delightful, thoroughly researched crack.

Co-Valence by Minimalistless (Mature, 26k) Eridians believe forcing someone to sleep is a uniquely abhorrent crime, so Grace doesn't want Rocky to find out he was forced into a coma. Delicious hurt/comfort.

i beg to differ, said the red fox by deervsheadlights/@deervsheadlights (Teen & Up, 32k) Rocky convinces Grace to go back to Earth, but Rocky doesn't go with him. Grace is Not Doing Well and has a haunting relationship with a still-living Stratt. Devastatingly sad.

The Astrobiology Immersion Program by startingatmidnight/@startingatmidnight (Teen & Up, 48k) Rocky and Grace bodyswap on the trip to Erid! Body horror, gender contemplations, unhelpful muscle memory, and attempts to solve the bodyswap mystery with science.

EXPLICIT FICS

friend husband brother father by spqr (4k) Rocky reads Oedipus Rex. Eridian family structures, Grace's sad childhood, and daddy kink as a vehicle for codependency.

It Is Imperative That The Cylinder Remains Unharmed by startingatmidnight/@startingatmidnight (5k) Possibly the funniest smut I have ever read in my life. What if your first time with your alien bestie went catastrophically wrong and you imagined consulting Reddit about it.

the pioneers used to ride these babies for miles by spqr (5k) Rocky is an excellent massage therapist. Featuring demisexual Grace, Karl Marx, erotic rain sounds, and delightfully weird sex.

plans for life by spqr (6k) Rocky wants to get Grace pregnant. It's not a sex thing (kind of). Forays into engineering sex toys, a marriage proposal, and what it means to be part of a family.

Light-Permeable Solid by voidknight/@eldritch-elrics (7k) Eridians don't experience sexual arousal and Grace is aroace, but he still has libido. My very favorite Gracerocky arrangement: intimate platonic sex! Yippee!!

The Scientific Method by Quarfield/@convocation-conduit (17k - Ongoing) Rocky's eggs are stuck in his reproductive system (the author has a diagram) and he needs help expelling them. In most fics, Grace is a bottom, but here he's a service top.

pilot study (knowledge gaps) by deervsheadlights/@deervsheadlights (18k) The sex pollen fic ever!! Aspec Grace being annoyed and alarmed by the sex-pollening, top-tier Rocky POV, wonderful prose, and a unique approach to Eridian arousal.

The Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known by SerotoninShift/@juliana-jones (32k) Grace isn't the only one who felt lonely on his home planet. Internalized ableism, Grace and Rocky being book-accurate jerks, and my fav take on Eridian non-reproductive sex.
