"This life, this cold, lonely life, it is so very tiring", a man mumbles to himself in the center of a verdant city park, his hand on the grass surrounding him as he lays on the soft earth, "perhaps today is the day it all just...stops....", He says as his deep hazel eyes shut tight as though he is trying to shut out the laughter around him, his short brown hair interspersed with yellow pollen and his roguish attire filthy almost beyond the point of comfort, the covering over his mouth practically in tatters

He leans back, his medium built frame hitting the ground with a subdued thud and his head turning down and to the side, pointing to the pistol peeking out from the waistband of his solid black pants, his lips whispering the prayer he recited nearly every day "may your barrel be silent for eternity, my only friend"

The war had started quickly, the absence of the Grey Vessel leading to a conflict between the Righteous and Sinful Shades that had been, for the years since their  leaders’ imprisonment within him, kept at bay  by the forced cohabitation. in short order the forces of both had poured through into the mortal plane, reducing what was a prosperous world into one of eternal twilight, the unholy fusions that were born of Vaylians bonding to their physical counterparts acting as the grand armies of both sides.

as midnight gives way to the first moments of a new day, a familiar creature appears beside many who have met the hellion known as Darkwing, it is Unmal, the spirit of the dread world Unmalta and despite his featureless face the gentlemanly terror seems distraught, his suit is torn, his hands covered in thick black blood and his stance unsteady. With a tone brimming with naught but worry and care, he pleads his case saying “it has happened, our King has imprisoned himself in the Tower!”, his voice shaking as though there is much more beyond his words
